How much noise is too much?
Have to wonder how many of the hot rod 911s have set off car alarms in a parking garage? I just had my first experience doing it yesterday and I have to admit it was kinda sweet
Once I figured out what the hell was going on it became even more fun!Funny thing was I was just driving out...no monkey business on my part, and not a single throttle blip. Last edited by rdane; 08-07-2003 at 05:46 PM.. |

Yep, my car is loud, I set off alarms all of the time at work. Sometimes it is from idling, sometimes a throttle blip, and sometimes when I drive by. The pressure/sound waves must need to be just right for it to happen which is why it seems somewhat independent of the throttle.

From my motorcycle days to the 930, I love setting off alarms.
If you can't tweak a few alarms your vehicle is not loud enough. |

Here are some ways to determine "too much":
1. you are losing power, not gaining it as the noise increases 2. cops stop you all the time; DMV threatens to revoke your license 3. you get fatigued when driving long distances 4. attractive women scowl at you 5. pedestrians walking past get angry at the noise from your car and smash the sheet metal or glass. 6. Neighbors leave notes about the noisy car on your windshield (broken). 7. Your boss flips you off; then recognizes you. |

I set off the same car alarm almost every day in my parking garage. At first it was by accident, now, I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed if I don't hear it.

My neighbor came across the street to ask if my muffler was broken. I told her no, it's supposed to sound like that. Then she told me it was rattling the mirrors in her house. Cool huh.

If your ears ring for two hours after a twenty-minute trip to the grocery store ... that might be too loud!
A .50 Action Express handgun is DEFINITELY TOO LOUD to use for personal protection! My 'Cuda sets off car alarms 100 yards away when started up in outdoor parking lots at malls, schools, grocery stores, etc.

It doesn't have to be loud to set off car alarms. My C2 sets them off, and it has stock exhaust. That 3.6 just has a very deep rumble to it that sets them off just from almost idling by.

The point at which you have blood coming out your ears might be too much. Until that point, enjoy!

Mine does the car-alarm thing too.
Makes me feel like John Candy in that 80's flick "Uncle Buck".

If it's too loud, you're too old

Mine is quieter than Tyson's, practically, and it sets them off. Like he says, it might be the frequency more than the volume.
For long drives, I have noise-canceling headphones that connect to an iPod. But that's suspension, bushing and intake volume, more than exhaust.

You want noise??
Try firing a non-silenced 44 Mag from inside a car with only one window open. My ears were ringing for hours. On the motor side....yup my Harley sets off alarms too. When I go to the mall for lunch....it sets off several on the way in (open air)...and a bunch more on the way back to work. Bob

Haha! I've been there! My old 928 (with big pipes) sounded like a full-blown Nascar. It was freakin' awesome. At idle and at a low cruise, it was deeply menacing and at WOT, needle climbing up the tach, the sound went from Winston Cup to Top Fuel Dragster!

(Try firing a non-silenced 44 Mag from inside a car with only one window open.) If that was a 44 Mag snubbie, did the headliner get scorched?
