Can Euros pass smog in Cali?

I've received a number of responses to my post about selling my SC. A few potential buyers have asked whether it would pass smog in California. At present, the car does not have a cat, since no one in Nebraska cares. I do know that the previous owner had passed smog in California in the mid-90s, with a cat.

Are there any other Euro SC owners in California that have passed smog? I'm assuming, with the addition of a cat, mine would probably pass.

Probably with a cat it might, but the again the emission laws are much stricter than they used to be. Without a cat, that's like asking whether bush will ever leave the middle east alone (the answer is no BTW)!

Anecdotal, for sure, but I had my '76 on an engine analyzer a few years ago getting the CO set and the guy ran the emissions diagnostic test and said that my car would have passed CA emissions (as they existed at the time). This was on a euro '76 with 2.7 and no emissions equipment at all.

It might pass the actual emissions, but isn't there a visual check also?

My 83 euro 3.0 had a smog pump as well....best to check the EPA paperwork that SHOULD be with the car. I assume that it's a grey market 911?

my grey market '83 passes smog w/ the cat in place, although it does take a pretest or two to get the engine/emissions components nice and hot so they do their job well.

There is a visual check, usually a mirror hooked up to a rod that takes a peak under your car. If you get some idiot doing the inspection, maybe they can be convinced that those weird headers are cat's and headers in one. That would be hillarious if you pulled it off.

A euro car will trigger an inspection by the state referree. These guys are much much better than average and they have tons of computerized records of what the engine compartment looks like, what the engine smog stuff looks like, certainly know what the difference between the thermal reactor and a cat convertor.
