Bilsteins raised my front ride height

I just installed Bilstein HD strut carts. in my 1980 SC. Before the install the front height was at 25.5 as per Bruce Anderson's book. After installing the Bilsteins I cant get the height down to below 26". Will the struts settle after driving a while or what can I do to bring it down?

Thanks
Bernie P

They might settle down but if they are like my Konis on the rear, they won't. You will have to re-index the torsion bars as per Wayne's 101 projects book.

It's an easy job. The rears however.......

No! No! No!

I was told by the shop that they will (aka, the check is in the mail!). Never again.

I finally had to lower, corner-balance, and align it myself!

If you drop the front to exactly the same height it was at before the struts were installed the alignment will be the same as it was before.
They will settle a little but not all the way until they wear out.

You can make the adjustment very easily with an 11mm socket, just be sure to get it even.
You will have to roll the car several feet after every adjustment to make sure the car is settled before measuring.

My problem is that I am at the end of the adjustment screws and it is still at 26" height. I have Waynes book so I will look at reindexing the bars. I was hoping someone would tell me that it would settle down after a few days. Thanks again.

Hmmm, i never new that shock or struts could change your ride height, interesting though.

The high pressure gas charge in Bilsteins causes them to provide about 45lbs of lift, each. So the front end has an extra 90 lbs of lift.

re-indexing the fronts is super easy. Just remove the adjuster screws and pop off the adjuster cap, rotate, reinstall. Turn adjusters to set the correct ride height. 15 minute job.

Good idea to do a corner balance at this point.

If this ever settles, that means you lost the gas charge and the shocks need rebuilding.

Thanks Chuck,
I did it last night and you were right 15 minute job. I didn't know the end caps were so easy to remove! Thanks again.
