Question Engine Swap! But Which Engine????

Hi all

Ok i've decided to restore the 911 to standard looks but I think while i'm at it I might as well drop an engine in that has some go!

My mate has a Scooby WRX Sti full spec import which is like the proverbial off the shovel, and he goes on and on about the performace of his car and how much quicker than Porsches etc it is.

Now I know his car could never be in the same league as my 911(even in it's current state) as I now own my dream car, a piece of history and a variant of the most beautiful car in the world, BUT! I would at least like to be able to stay within sight of him!

So my question being, what would be my best choice of engine swap? I don't really want to have to modify too many things about the car so I would like to stick with an early engine! and I would like it to be quick!

I have just been told of an engine from a Carrera 2 with all it's bits and pieces and a tiptronic box for £2k but I would prefer to keep the engine somewhere closer to the cars age!

Any suggestions? Any thoughts on prices of suggested engines/boxes?

Porsche Crest What do YOU want from it?

If you're going to design your car to compete with your friend's, then stick all your money in the engine, and turbo charge it.

If, on the other hand, you decide to do to a Porsche what was meant to be done with it and race it for your own personal pleasure, then do simply one thing: Get the newest year engine your budget will allow for, as well as beefing up the suspension and brakes with the idea of a lightweight GT in mind.

This should get you to consider the 3.0 to 3.6 naturally aspirated designs, because the power would be there without turbo-lag, as well as too-many-to-mention turbo related expenses. Also keep in mind to get the tranny matched to the power of the engine you want to use. For a non-turbo, a 915 type would suffice as long as it in good shape.

Most of us on this board appreciate the design of Jack Olsen's BB2 car, which he does use to race, but there are countless other builds by the guys here who you may want to use as an example of a great Porsche 911!

Have a good time of it, and remember who it really was meant for.

I think a hi compression RS spec motor would be the ultimate early motor and is one of my dream engines. It would make in the neighborhood of 220+. That's over double what's in your '69 right now. I would rather see MFI on it than carbs but it takes lots of $$ to do it right. On the other hand Weber carbs would look period correct for your engine and if it is still single plugged nobody but you (and the people you left in the dust) would know the difference.
