I wouldent be suprised to learn MB is thinking about putting one of those daddies in an upcoming amg baged car. Damn german luxury car manufacturers are in a definate horsepower war these days. how about an sl 90000. The sl stands for super light of course!! and the 90000 is for hp.

100RPM! You'd have to run it through the transmission backwards (and shift 5-1) to gear it UP for the road. That is unless you like a top speed of about 1.89 mph at redline.

271.5 metric tons (271527 kilos) of, I guess, heavy or intermediate fuel oil per 24 hours (at nominal max. continuous output). That's a lot (but then, it probably is a very favorable figure)! |
Why piston? Why not a turbine for an application that big?

I like that opposed piston motor. If I remember right those were the motors used in the Luftwaffe Junkers bombers during WW2. Kinda hard to believe that those things actually worked. Diesel Supercharged. I wonder how high of compressiobn that thing ran?
Im still wondering how they get that first motor to start. You would need a jet to get it turning. then at the rtight moment, inject fuel and fire it up. can you imagine how LOUD that thing must be? |

Jared: if you talk about Deltic, it was used in locomotives and boats and developed after WWII by british company. Actually, boat that Martin Sheen rides in "Apocalypse Now" is powered by small 9-cylinder Deltic. It wasn't too hard to start at all...just a small turn and off it goes.
Turbo6bar: Big diesel engine Wayne showed does use a turbocharger (probably one per cylinder). Actually, all big 2-stroke diesels depend on turbochargers to properly purge exhaust-gases from cylinders. |
beepbeep, I was actually reffering to the huge engine at the beginning of the thread. How do you start that!?
Speaking of diesels, my dad recently bought a 6.2L Banks turbocharged GMC crewcab dually with a utility bed. This thing is AWESOME. it was a ex-L.A. County Fire Dept. truck he got at auction. It's funny, with the Banks on there, it pulls like a regualr truck, almost no lag. It's eveng ot a 4 speed with a granny gear! |
