Sound mat and the interior?
The question below came from one of RallyJon's threads here:
Sound deadening works too well Quote:
RallyJon's web site is a good start if you want to redue your interior. http://www.rallystuff.com/pcar_interior.html I used the same basic level of deadening described by RallyJon but added a just a bit more on the lower vertical shelf and seat area to kill some heat transfer. I too found the combination extremely effective. So much so that I can now hear the blinker signal. Neither the pervious owners, myself or my wife thought the car had an audio turn signal indicator! We can now hear the stero and talk in normal conversational tones while in the car. I tore out a fairly nice, but 25 year old interior to go with the RS look internally and drop some weight. After getting into the project and wondering what I had gotten myself into I had regretted it. My factory sound mat was in excellent shape as was the felt below it. I figured it was wasted energy to remove everything and not be able to do it better than the factory had. The new interior (sound mat and carpet) ended up close to the same weight over all BUT the car is much more quiet. Technology has changed in the last 20 years. My 911 is much quietier and weighs in a bit less too. Besides now I have new carpets! The change over is worth the time and money IMO. Last edited by rdane; 08-17-2003 at 07:37 PM.. |

Not that much to show really. RallyJon has better pictures on the sound mat.
I did a different carpet material, Bentley, which is a very high quality and plush carpet as an option to the RS light weight kits. The difference in weight is almost nill between the lightweight RS kits and a current high quality carpet. The difference in new sound mat is amazing. Being able to finally hear the turn signal is an impressive level of noise reduction. I had added a 2 in 2 out Dansk which was loud enough to make a couple of hours in the car tiring. Even that noise is lowered and more user freindly. Car has a new Alpine radio/CD player which can now be enjoyed with the engine running. Before: ![]() After: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Those seats look great...a lot like the GT3 ones! What are they? the plush carpet looks good too. I'm not familiar with Bentley...any info or link you can share? All in all it looks really super.

and I've been into Dynamat, and "brown bread" for awhile.. so, IMO, getting rid of some tin can harmonics makes the exhaust and engine sound cleaner........Ron

I had the carpet and door panels done locally by Herold Upholstery in Redmond, WA. Replacement cushion inserts are being done done by Ricaro in Germany, but I had to send them color samples. The wait is on going. The seats are SPG Pole Position in leather. We love them! One of the best investments I have made in the car. An hour of leather tretament and conditioning made the seats jet black in color (as opposed to the out of the plastic wrap gray pictured here) and have a luxurious leather feel to them now.
Couple of the guys on the BB mentioned the seats. I just followed their lead. Along with the cork cushion inserts are OEM German silver knit carpets in cork as floor mats. Not impressed with the quality of the German silver knit in comparison to the Bentley carpet. Sorry I don't have a web url for you. Anyone specializing in Porsche upholstery work should have samples I suspect. After much hand wringing, I decided to keep the cork colored dash and rear deck, so I did the RS door panels in the Porsche cork to match. Black is a nice combo with the cork I think. So does Porsche by the look of some of the new Carrera GTs which use that same combo. I bet they saw my car's combo first and copied it ![]() Car color is mocha brown, 451 and still original paint. Original carpet, interior and leather seats were cork, 5A-. Car is done except for a Euro 3.6 transplant coming up in the near future. The Dynamat, and Brown Bread sound reduction combo are a signifigant improvement over the stock 20 year old cars and highly recommended. And easy enough to do yourself from my experience. ![]() ![]() Last edited by rdane; 08-17-2003 at 09:23 PM.. |

Hi Dane, the car is looking great and those wheels fill out the flairs just right. Your car was quick before , that 3.6 is going to turn it into a rocket. ric

Thanks Ric! Picked up a few parts this last weekend @ JW's swap meet. By later afternoon I was doing a little test run up to the summit on I90. Had some fun with an older Targa and Z06 as we played tag. I am betting both guys are still wondering "what the hell does he have in that thing"

I just did the rear RS look in my 73 after some rust repair on the parcel shelf. I used a $9 roll of the foil insulation they sell at Pep Boys ( I was on a really tight budget). I still may go to a better insulation but my set up is amazingly effective. It is a little quieter than the 73' insulation was, cheap and easy to do. I would guess that the Pep Girls insulation is about 30% the weight of the factory stuff. I will post pics when I get some.

That car has turned into one bad-looking mofo Dane! Hope you can manage cleaning those pesky spokes on the FM-10's
![]() So I assume you're really pleased with the change from the SRD to the Pole Position? I've thought about SRD's but many say the Pole Position wins hands down. You of this opinion too? Nice post about the sound deadening. Gives a good product recommendation to those who want to redo their carpet and sound padding.

The 235's on the front are probably a different story?

As KTL says, nothing done on the rear wheels and lots of clearance available.
Fronts rub a tiny bit on the drivers side during a really hard, downhill, off camber, right hand turn. Less though than a 225/50/16. Not enough so that I haven't pulled them off the front yet. I will go to a 22545/17 next. Fender is rolled flat on the inside and my car is very tight for clearence on driver's front side. I was running 16", 205 and 245s. Quote:

rdane, your car is crazy cool. I want my white SC to look just like yours except with no tail.
![]() I installed a pair of SRDs last week, and they're fabulous. The SRDs are leagues ahead of the stock Carerra seats used previously. I would probably enjoy the Pole Positions, but I need something good for a daily driver. Guys, if you want a great seat, the SRD is a great choice, but if you want something trick and light for a weekend car, the Pole Position might be perfect. Jurgen |
