Question New Guy with Rust

Hello Everyone,

Ive been lurking for about a year (so long my old username does not work anymore0 and now that Ive bought a 72 911 Im afraid its time to come out of the shadows.

I have a 72E with rust that Im trying to repair. Now that I have the car somewhat apart Ive ony had one really bad Rust surprise. (I inspected the car using this BBS Info and the Lindsay Porter boook)

The PO have a 911 reflector panel on that covered up the rusting rear crossmember latch. (photo attached). This piece is replaceable but seemingly will require removal of the rear fenders. Am I correct on this?

If I am correct, would it be possible to cut the fender in half veritcally after the wheel well and remove only that section? This would allow for reomoval and easy replacement because I would have several replacement references to butt weld the fender portion back in.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

TIA

You don't have to remove the rear fenders to replace this part. It is simply cut away near where it attaches to the longitudinal and the new one welded in. Now, having said that, I am speaking from the viewpoint of a later '74-'89 style body, so there may some slight differences.

My car was rear-ended years ago and this was one of the components that need to be replaced. No drama.

Send a message via Yahoo to RichMason
Buy the repair panel first and then figure out what you have to cut to make it fit.

oh you guys and your rational advice. Measure once, cut twice...that's what I always say. Now if MikeZ can offer something about sandwiches we'll be all set.

"I cut it twice, and it was still too short!" (Bottom line...buy the part, then figure out how to install it.)
