Output shaft bearing race
OK gentlemen, as most of you know i've been tackling both the engine and trans on my SC. Well i sent out my pistons and cylinders to be checked and i'm waiting for them and my new gaskets and studs to come back. So while i'm waiting, i decided to uncover the trans and get a little further in progress with it. I'm proud to announce that i successfully timecerted the threads for the 1-2 detent bolt. Didn't come out perfectly straight due to my lack of drill press but with a dremel and some patience, the detent functions flawlessly in there. Now for the bad news, or at least i think it's bad news. My trans is a late 915 with the aluminum case. The bearing race for the output shaft on the differential side moves. As in when i run my finger on it, it will start rotating with my finger. I was under the impression that they were pressed in since i see that the input race won't move. It's not loose enough to come out, or at least without a really good fight, but loose enough to spin in place. Is this bad? Am i going to have to get another one? And if i have to replace it, how the hell to i do so?

It is very common for this to happen. A machinist can put put an insert in the case. Every one I've seen this in 'cept one, the own chose not to fix it and they seem to work fine if that is any consulation.
You guys with 3.6's bolted up to 915's are going to have this problem in the future if you don't already. As I understand it, heat and torque cause this problem. Heat expands the case more than the press fit for the bearing and the hole that the bearing race sits in gets pounded oval. -Chris

Hmm, makes sense, but if it has no play at all, just lost it's press fit to keep it from rotating then maybe i can be ok.

if you can't move the race sideways, just use "loctite stud and bearing mount", and it should be fine for years. if the race moves sideways, replace the diff housing.

Is that the same as locktite red, used for head studs on the motor? I think i have the permatex red in the garage.

It's Loctite Green 290 or Permatex 29000 (something like that). It wicks in after assembly. It didn'y work on a friend's transmission but it is good to know it works sometimes at least.
