24/28 Pin DME chip socket - 88 911
Well - I was all motivated to change out the software in my Carrera this afternoon - took out the DME - factory chip, etc and brought out one of Steve Wongs finest creations and noticed...
That Steves chip was a 28 pin and my socket is only a 24 pin... blast. Ive done some searches and learned that the 28 pin socket is an 'upgrade' of sorts... but where would I get this done? I also understand that 87 was the transition year from 24 to 28. If so, is it possible that I have the WRONG DME in my car!?!? PMed Steve about a possible mistake in shipping, but based on the searches, I think I have an 'old' DME without the 28 pin socket. Whats my next move and where the hell do I go to make it?

My brothers 87 has a 24, my 89 has a 28 pin chip. The 88 may of been a transition year with some 24's and some 28's. Remember, these cars were dwindling in demand back in the 80's and I'm sure they has plenty of parts stock piled before actually building the car.

Steve will be able to burn you the same maps in a 24 pin package.

My 87 had a 28 pin chip. (I just put in Steve's chip last week)
Steve had me check my chip first to find out the pins. I thought 87 was the transition year but Steve would know for sure. My DME box had a 1991 sticker on it so I think mine was changed at some point. I'm sure Steve can sort it out for you. You'll really like the chip.

I believe there is a bit of gray area here.....You can't determine which pin layout you have for 87-88...you just have to open her up to be sure.

My understanding is they changed from 24 to 28 mid-year during the 1987 model year production. If your car is indeed an '88, then maybe someone has changed the DME. If it's working OK, why not have Steve swap you for a 24-pin? Or you can have a 28-pin socket installed in your DME - ask Steve about it.

Ask Steve seems to be the common theme!
I have an October '86 production '87 model. Steve had me open the DME and count the pins before he burned the chip. He confirmed that I had a transitional year DME. As you might expect it was 24 pin. When I asked about the 28 pin version he told me there would be no significant performance difference.

Thanks all - thats pretty much what Ive been reading. Some guys find 24 pin DME's in their 89's and some guys find 28's in their 86's. I guess its a mix of DME swapping and parts left over for the 88's and 89's.
In any event - I suppose Ill just ask Steve if I can exchange my 28 for a 24 in stead of having someone fit a 28 pin socket. Now.. I just have to wait another week until Im reaquainted with low end torque.
