Pictures of different tails/wings

Anyone have any good sites (or photos themselves) that have multiple pictures of different mounted tails/wings. I have an '86 cabriolet carrera and I'm itching to add a wing. Problem is that I'd like to see if the standard carrera wing is what I'm looking for or if the turbo wing looks good (not too obnoxious) on a std carrera. Plus I'd like to see 'mounted' aftermarket set-ups. It seems that most pictures (product catalog or listings on ebay etc.) have close ups and I'd like to see the "look" on the whole car (maybe 10ft back from the rear, side, etc.)

You see cars drive by on the road, but it's always hard to tell what wing is on it!

Thanks
Jesse

Do a search for "big butts" there was a topic a few months back where everybody was posting pictures of their rear ends.

I don't know if this helps, but here's my car ('78 SC) it has what is commonly known as a turbo tail. There were several variations of the "turbo tail", this one is period correct for the car. This one is also genuine Porsche, BTW, but not "factory", in this vintage these were often a dealer installed option.

Hopefully some will post a carrera tailed 911 for you. Sorry I don't know of a site with pictures of just "tailed" 911's. Of course you could just browse the Pelican galleries.

Good luck,

Period correct for the year, but not for SCs. There were no turbo tails on narrow body cars.

Rattlsnak, back before the Carrera tail for the 3.2L cars you could get a turbo tail on a narrow body.

With all due respect, the tail that is in Jmohn pics never came on a narrow body car. And what everybody calls the carrera tail, first came out on SCs. Of course i could be totally wrong..

Sure there were. I already said "not factory". If you wanted a tail on an SC ( and didn't want a duck-tail) you had a choice of several "whale, turbo or Carrera tails. The one on my car (known also as the "tea-tray" was intoduced in '78 (therefore period correct) but only, from the factory, on the turbo model (as I said the one on my car isn't factory). I think, for subsequent years, this spoiler was offered as an option, first only on targas, later on coupes. However, throughout this time anyone could get any of these tails installed on his car at the dealer or other after-market shop. You are partially correct, about USA SC's not having "turbo" tails, in that the only SC I'm aware of that came (without it being a specific dealer installed option) with a tail, in the USA was the "Weissach" special edition offered in 1980. There were, however, SC's with tails offered in the UK (and perhaps other markets) with a "sports" package that included the rear spoiler. Conjecture is this was not truly a "factory" package either, but merely a desirable combination of options designed by the importers for their market. Regardless, you could get an SC with a tail, if you wanted one.

Good luck,

Jerry M
'78 SC
BTW, the first "Carrera tail" was offered on the Carrera (late '73 (?) Carrera RS) ... hence the name.

RS America tail. Looks just like a carrera tail without the wiper hole. It's also fiberglass but I don't know if the Carrera tail is fg as well. I do know that it wasn't available on the SC.

Not true. Turbo tails were installed on SCs, even by the factory. One of the local 911 guys here in the DC area has one on his SC. When I asked why he installed a turbo tail instead of a Carrera tail, he told me that it was stock from the factory like that. To be sure, I consulted the Porsche library:

"When the 3.3 Turbo was marketed, its new rear spoiler was also offered as an optional fitting on the 911SC, replacing the previous model" Porsche 911 Story, Paul Frere, p 229

Also look at Original Porsche 911, page 67. There a picture of a 1979 SC Targa with a Turbo tail.

Jerry, what size tires are you running all the way around? Those look fatter than OE and I like the look.

Hi ZAMIRZ,

Those are Kumho Ecsta 712's. On the front I used 225/50x16 and on the rear 245/45x16. The rims are 7x16 front and 8x16 rear. I have a little extra camber in the front (about 1.75 degrees negative) and the inner lip of the fender was rolled by a PO, so there's no clearance problems. In spite of opinions to the contrary these 245/45's fit very nicely on 8" rims (I think this depends very much on the tire, often 9" is better or required).

Cordailly,

Kurt, you're right. I'm not sure what the PO was thinking when they set that up. It's actually worse than in the picture. Spirited driving produces a scary ass floating sensation in the front end that I could really do without. Sometime this fall, I'll get it in and aligned and corner balanced.
