Steering Column Wobble

I have searched and found a thread addressing my problem. The thread left me with some questions though.

First, some background. My steering wheel felt noticeably loose last night after getting the car back from the body shop due to a light front end collision. Once I got it home I removed the horn pad and noticed that the wheel is not loose on the shaft but instead the whole shaft wobbles. An archive search led me to a thread which suggested a plastic bushing, which normally takes up this slop, may be deteriorated or destroyed. Pelican sells a replacement bushing for just this purpose (Pelican PN F-347-739-02, Porsche PN 92834773902). The PET cd does not show this part in the steering wheel/shaft assembly. Where does this part go? How is it installed?

BTW, insurance is still on the hook for this repair so if there are other issues to be checked out in the column please enlighten me.

Very easy, first you have to take the s/wheel off and then insert the new bushing over the shaft pushing it as far as it will go then with a peas' of pip or carefully knock it all the way in with a hammer.
Cheers Steve

Nate,
I had a wobble myself and found that there is a bushing that you just drive onto the shaft that takes up the wobble. Replacing the original bushing appears to be a real bear. There are alot of threads on the bbs that shows how to do this...along with a tech article.

If the Ins co. is on the hook, then you may want to look into having the original replaced. However, it is a DIY PITA.

Dave

It's a very easy fix. The bushing just slides in to take the place of the old plastic one that disintegrated. There is no need to remove the old one if you can’t get it out. It takes about 10 min.

Thanks Steve. However, can that be all that's required? That's it? Is there another piece in there that I need to remove? What was doing this piece's job before?
