Tilton starters
I'm considering replacing the 20-year-old starter and solenoid in my SC with a new Tilton. (I think the solenoid has gone bad, though it may be the motor itself; car runs fine once you push-start it.) Anybody had any experience with 'em?

Stephan,
If that is the light high torque model, I put one in my '87 last year. It was and is fine. Much lighter than the OEM starter. Ned

I like mine. Weighs less and cranks over the 3.6 no problemo.

I have one of them in my SC, seems to work great and is much lighter. Kinda pricey...

I got a Nippon Denso 2kW starter from a place which custom-made the mounting part (they copied my 0.8hp Bosch one). It was about US$200. I bought it (obviously) from a place which specialises in starters...
It cranks over the 10.5:1 3.2 short stroke like it isn't even there... like a machine gun.

Not all "High Torque Starters" are "Tiltons".
A "Tilton" will run about $450. Repair parts are available from some of the folks like Truesports in Ohio. A "High Torque Starter" will run somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 - $250. Generally, these starters are made with a more-common motor (Hitachi in some cases) and a custom nose piece to mount up to Porsche. The Tilton has been around for a long time but everyone I've asked about the "High Torque Starters" they are selling tell me they don't have any problems with them. I'd have a hard time justifying the Tilton since they cost almost 2X the others. Does anyone have experience with Tilton? Jim 73 911 that will need a new starter someday. |

I'm asking about Tiltons, not generic "high-torque starters." I understand the difference.
