RUF Spoiler/Cooler Install - Experiences?

Hi Folks,

I did a search before placing this post - but I still didn't find images of a "real" RUF Front Spoiler and Oil Cooler being installed on a later "Classic" Carrara.

So, does anyone have some images and experiences to share? I am about to install one of these guys to my 87 and will be using the extra cooling capacity for the 3.6 that is being installed at the same time (finally!).

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I don't know about the "real" RUF front spoiler. I used the MA Shaw version in front of a Setrab oil cooler. The same set up that Thom (widebody) used, but without cutting into the tub. Bill V's site shows the B&B oil cooler setup behind a Better Bodies (I think) RUF front bumper cap. Both Thom and Bill have a web site with pics of the install.

Not a 'real' Ruf part but replica bumper cap and the Mocal version (APC-16) of the ruf cooler with -16 hose fittings on the ends

Purchased 2 -16/30 mm adapters from Bat Inc (www.batinc.net) and installed them on the hard line and cooler as shown (blue anodized fittings)

And the -16 braided lines were attached to the adapters and run to the cooler as shown

Brackets on the top were used to mount the cooler in the existing holes from the front valance mounts
An additional lower mount was provided with the cooler (see black bar on ground in first picture) but it isn't suitable and will have to be modified to use for the lower mounting that runs back to the torsion bar housing. Even without the lower mount the oil cooler is quite securely mounted.

Here is the bumper cap prior to mounting

Only problem noted upon mounting the bumper cap was that the right hand fog light and right hand fitting on the oil cooler interfered and the fitting will be changed to a 90 degree fitting to allow clearance for the fog light.

Todd, thanks for the pix. I am assembling the parts to do the same thing to my car. I have some questions to ask. what material did you use for the spoiler? Did you choose the mocal cooler with outlets on opposite ends for a specific reason? Did the grille come with the front bumper. where did you purchase your front bumper?
Thanks, Craig

John

I have some other pictures, I figured I would post them when I finally have the car on the road. Right now I'm still waiting on a new starter and hopefully that will be it

Craig

If you are referring to the rubber lip it is an actual Ruf piece that I purchased from a board member along with the welting for between the bumpers and body. It could be easily replicated from a piece of rubber conveyer belt.
The mocal cooler was purchased for no particular reason other than I believe it to be a good piece and it is dimensionally the same as the ruf unit so I was optomistic it would work with the Ruf bumper
The bumpers (I actually have the rear Ruf replica as well) were part of the group buy with other Pelican members. Contrary to what was stated when they were purchased they required quite a bit of work to get to meet my standards. They were from BW Motorsports the same as Bills.

The grill came with the bumpers, it is kind of cheesy but looks ok, it is simply a piece of aluminum sheet painted black with a plastic mesh front. I had a rear decklid grill that I cut to fit the opening but I screwed it up and had to revert to the current grill for the time being.

Thanks for the info. Todd. Are you going to use your AC? I noticed that you did not cover the opening for your front condenser with the oil cooler. I ask, because I plan to use mine. It's to hot here to be without AC!! Thanks again ,Craig

Hard plastic backing plate installed with cooler and lamps. Backing plate mounts with 2 mounts at light braket and 2 additional mounts that are part of fixture attaching cooler to spoiler.

PU portion snaps in place with 2 additional mounts/ screws under bellows.

HTH.

BTW I have a spare black plastic mount plate (pictured) without cooler and lamps for sale.

Bingo!

Thanks for the pics of the Ruf spoiler and cooler installation, I have a bit better of an idea of how this system works. Not to be too greedy, but if you have more pictures, such as close ups of the attachment to the body and the installed spoiler from the side, I'd love to see them!

Car looks great!

dwightp,
What brand is your valance? How was the fit and finish? Do you have any side shots?
Thanks,
Mark

Chris:

Left side attachement to PU spoiler.

Attachment to lights, you can see the piece from the back of the spoiler backing piece/oil cooler (right above cooler line fitting). Other end mounts to body.

Side shot:

Mark:

Hmmm. It's RUF. Direct from RUF Germany. Fit and finish were outstanding. PU had to be painted of course.
