Questions you were always afraid to ask thread!

Someone once said "better to keep your mouth shut and keep them guessing than to open your mouth and remove all doubt". Someone else said "there is no such thing as a dumb question". Well dammit, lets let 'em rip and get 'em all answered at once, I'll start.

What the hell is in "spot free rinse" at the diy carwash?

pwd72s 08-26-2003 02:17 PM

Probably a surfactant, like Cindy uses in our dishwasher to get "spot free dishes". Hey, I may not mind having it on my plate, but I don't want it on my car's paint...I use a California water blade and a chamois to dry my car. But what the hell, I'm retired...and I LIKE cleaning & waxing the Porsche.

cegerer 08-26-2003 02:24 PM

OK, why do people line up at gas stations for 30 minutes to save 2 cents per gallon (probably less than 50 cents savings per tank!!!!!!) ???????????????????????????????

And why do people threaten to cancel vacation plans because gas is now $1.89 instead of $1.50 last year????????????? For a 400 mile round trip that's only $8 more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JSDSKI 08-26-2003 02:27 PM

Some are multiple tank systems and the tap water is given different treatments in each tank as it moves from one to the next. One tank might use charcoal filtering and the next something to reduce calcium carbonate, and so forth. I don't think they add softeners (like salts).

MarkP 08-26-2003 02:27 PM

Why do people stop when merging into a collector/distributor lane?

JSDSKI 08-26-2003 02:31 PM

Oops, forgot the question....

Why is the 2.7RS motor and chassis the 911 sweetspot in time?

pwd72s 08-26-2003 02:32 PM

Here, the "cheap" station is ARCO, and people are lined up to "save" a nickle a gallon or so...I guess they don't realize that brand is heavy into alcohol, and delivers about 10% less MPG than the Chevron right across the street.

Curt? Wish I could find gas for $1.89 here...Oregon now the 3rd highest gas prices in the nation, all stations here above $2.00 per gallon now...for regular! Oregon also has one of the highest gas taxes in the nation, but people seem to not be making the connection. As a plus, there seems to be fewer motor homes clogging up the mountain passes these days...

My question: Why, when people see a cat litter box, do they ask if we have a cat? I mean, do they think it's for company?

island911 08-26-2003 02:34 PM

Why do people drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway?

Jim Richards 08-26-2003 02:35 PM

Why are early 911 sport seats so darn heavy?

JSDSKI 08-26-2003 02:36 PM

A buck eighty-nine, Curt ? Try $2.49 this am in LA. We must be special.
Probably for the earthquake insurance.

Ionized water. Used at all dealerships. Most don't even wipe them down/dry them anymore. Good thing too. Because the pressure washer spray doesn't really clean them all that well. So. they would just end up scratching the finish.

I have no idea about the RS. I thought it was the 917.

Edit: OK, I got it. DEionized, DEionized..........DEionized......zzzzzz

Where is gas $1.89? I'll take two vacations for that!

johncj8989 08-26-2003 02:45 PM

If somebody offered to trade their Ferrari 308 for your 911... would you take it?

By virtue of very nature of this thread I claim excemption from being flamed for even asking. ;)

JTO 08-26-2003 02:46 PM

Zeke and the rest:

Its DEionized water. Meaning, the ions (salts) have been removed. This leaves nothing that will precipitate out on your paint and windows. This is usually done by ion exchange resin beds. How do I know? I'm a chemist and I am soon to be the owner of a car wash.

My question is, why would someone name a Porsche parts house "S-car go" or something of that nature. It implies the French dish which is made with snails. Snails are slow. Hmm. What's the logic there?

Why am I replying to this when I have so much work to do?

Is there a large percentage of a particularly thrifty religeous group in your neighborhood? (Trying to stay "PC") It's the reason in my neighborhood anyhow.....

andrew15 08-26-2003 02:52 PM

While we're asking question on gas....

While we are on the topic (sort of..)

Why does the US focus so much on high gas prices when they pay less than most of the world?

When I was kid living near the border we would always drive across to the US side to fill up - no matter how expensive it was there, it was cheaper than in Canada.

My sister in England recently bought a smart car because of high gas prices (smart car - not smart sister)

Andrew M

Nope. They are a crap car. Yes, have spent time driving one.

Jim Garfield 08-26-2003 02:53 PM

I just came back from Maine where gas was $1.54 p/gal. on Saturday.

And my question; has anyone graphed the price of gas the week before holidays? Here we are being told that the Ariz. pipeline problem and the recent east coast blackout have caused the prices to go up .45 p/gal this week.

Why is it that inflammable and flammable has the same meaning?

pbs911 08-26-2003 03:19 PM

Why didn't the castaways just get rid of Gilligan?

Yes I would trade my 911 for the Ferrari, sell the Ferrari to some sucker and use the money to buy a 993.

Who would vote for Gary Coleman over Gray Davis for Governor?

SilverPoly 08-26-2003 03:40 PM

Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes?

If nothing ever sticks to TEFLON, how do they make TEFLON stick to the pan?

Good question.
I first saw "inflammable" on a gas tanker when I worked in the Middle East. When I got back and looked it up in the dictionary I was surprised also.

My son asked me why most race tracks use gravel traps and fewer use asphalt when you run off the track. If the purpose is to slow you down, wouldn't asphalt be better (assuming your brakes are still working).

zephog 08-26-2003 03:57 PM

If God created Adam and Eve, why did they have belly-buttons?

andrew15 08-26-2003 04:01 PM

In my best Dr. Nick voice from the Simpsons:

Inflammable means Flammable? What a country!!

Or if you REALLY need to hear the real deal:

Only the paintings have belly buttons.

Because what good would a flotation device under a parachute be?

GSpreeman 08-26-2003 04:24 PM

Why is it I can post the most assinine questions here and have them answered but, I see a Porsche guy on the road and he's a moron?

Couldn't the Germans figure out a clearer setup for fresh air/heat/A/C in our cars? (in mine theoretically 192 different combinations)

Can't someone produce a valve for a 3.2 that wouldn't need adjusting?
