Question cost of rebuild?

has anyone ever used TRE Motorsports in North Hollywood, CA. for a complete engine rebuild?
Would you recommend them? What should I expect to pay?

In the kindest way I can say this, you have not read this BBS much for your 130+ posts. There are many Porsche shops in SoCal and TRE has some of the highest compliments going. As far as cost, that's a question for them.

If you are a DIYS'er then call around and ask around for a good engine shop and have all your messurments done there as well as cleaning, sizing, crank gears installed etc. Get a Bently manual and you can tear down and assemble your self. DIYS= $2000-4000 depending on shop and mods you do and parts you might need (P's&C's $2000+). I just got done with mine and had ***COUGH** MM (quiet i know i made a mistake there) do my machine work. I then took all my parts to a local guy here in colorado and had him balance and double check all of MM's work. For the most part they got things right. I needed new pistons so i found a set of used Nikasil P&C's for $950 (5000miles on em) perfect in spec too. With my 964 cams, port n polish, shaved heads, all parts, all shipping all told about $5200. And i did all the work myself.

You can spend as much or way more than you like. There are so many ways to make a rebuild expensive. Have fun.

I would not hesitate having TRE do anything to my car. Except maybe put it in a crusher, although if asked I'm sure they'd do that well too.

So yes, great place. Cost? I'd guess $10K plus or minus depending on what needs to be done.

The rule of thumb is $8K for any 1965-1989 engine if someone else rebuilds it (doesn't include removal an reinstall - just the rebuild), or about $6K if you do it yourself.

The pistons and cylinders on the later engines are very expensive, but the cases typically don't require machine work. The pistons and cylinders on the earlier engines are generally less expensive, but the cases require more machine work.

To save $2K, you probably have to have enough knowledge of what's right or what's wrong. For a weekend mechanic, I will let the shop do it with warranty. can I expect the engine to be as good as new for another 200K miles?

I spent over 7K on my rebuild in 1999. 2.5K went to machine shop work the rest went into new parts upgrades and tools. Did the work myself and have been very satisfied with the results. If you are mechanically inclined and can read and understand a shop repair manual then go for it. A garage to work in would be nice but not necessary, I did mine in a car port. Don't forget the engine rebuild forum for when you are stumped or unsure about something.

I admire you. The expression "God hates a coward" is certainly applicable here.

I have Leland's old P&Cs from his 3.0 and am slowly gathering parts for a rebuild at some date (about 20K down the line if I am lucky). I am looking very forward to the experience and challenge of building a leak-free engine.

If anyone in the Seattle area knows of a solid machine shop (the preferred machine shop I should say for Porsches) please do let me know. For all the crap the PWeir took their facilities were top-notch. I was pretty impressed by the setup.
