Disappearing gears?

My 911 is the only early 911 with a 901 that I've ever driven, so I'm not sure how much of this is normal vs something being wrong.

Shifting is painfully bad. The transmission doesn't grind, but I get problems where sometimes it gets stuck in second and I really have to pop it to get it back out, and sometimes I simply can't find first...

Now I've got a LOT of slop in the shifter. Not sure if I've got bad bushings or not. The previous owner said he had rebuilt the shifter mechanism with a short-shift kit and new bushings recently, no idea if he might've done it wrong.

In my S4, disappearing gears can be a sign of a misaligned shift mechanism. Is that true with the 901 too? Are there any adjustments that might help that? Another reason I'm not sure the P.O. rebuilt the shift assembly correctly is that I've got definite spring tension from vertical moving left, but it freely flops from vertical right. Is that normal? What about this sticking in 2nd thing?

Bushings and coupler along w/ adjustment are fairly easy to check. When done right they make a huge difference as long as the trans itself is in god shape. I highly recommend a zero clearance front bush and a zero slop brass coupler. I had these parts made, but I believe they are also available off the shelf(where I don't know)

They make a huge difference

The parts hook the shifter to the shift rod coming out of the gearbox. The less play they have the less play your shifter will have.

The bushing in the front guide is self explanatory, just zero play. Here is a pic of the brass pieces installed in the stock coupler. Again zero play. Makes for nice clean solid, shifts, w/ no vagueness. I also doubled the spring tension in the shift tower springs.

You might also check to be sure that the pinch bolt isn't stripped, that can cause some symptoms that you described.

You can buy 914 bushings for the coupler. They are zero play. Look just like those. I have them in mine. PP sells them, last time I checked.

Here's the PP part # for the no slop coupler bushings.

slide seats forward and get in back seat. take off the screen thing that sits on the floor/wall between/behind the seats. look at the shift coupler (see bill's pic #2 above). i suspect you will be able to grab it and move it all around due to cracked and smooshed bushings. look on the floor of that little tunnel. bet there is fluid/crap there. take a look and get back to us.

I'll do that. There may be fluid/crap in there... I noticed something dripping from that area under my car. Right before I bought it, the P.O. had a seal on the transmission (I think) replaced back there because of the leak. Might be leaking again, although that'd really irritate me.

It doesn't appear to be those bushings... they look new, so the PO must've replaced them when he had his motor rebuilt.

Zero play in the rear there... but if I hold the coupler still, the shifter itself wobbles all over the place, still, so presumably its something up there.

Tips what to look for?
