New Compressor Hitting #4 Intake Plenum on 1982 911SC

I've just bought a new Unicla (Sanden-style) compressor and adapter bracket for my 1982 911SC to replace the old York. With the new compressor mounted on the new bracket, the left side of the back of the compressor is just hitting the big square protrusion that's cast into the #4 intake plenum. I can raise the compressor up, but that puts it uncomfortably close to the underside of the deck lid. Anyone else have this as a clearance issue when they installed a Sanden or similar rotary-style compressor? Any issue if I just grid the protrusion off the plenum?

Grind away- that protrusion is not needed - it is solid aluminum, so you won't get into the intake tube portion

Something doesn't sound right,l it should fit without hitting, what type of adapter bracket did you get?

Most brackets bolt onto the compressor bracket which in turn get bolted, onto the bracket on the engine.

Go to the Pelican's tech web page there is a writeup on the conversion.

I have been thinking about servicing my air conditioner. the high and low preasure side fittings seem to be very difficult to get to. Is This a problem getting a guage on them. If i were to convert to R-35 I don't think I could get ythose larger fittings on.

You must have a yorkie compressor.

It's a five step process with the yorkie unless you want to do some body modification

1. remove yorkie and connect gauge manifold
2. reinstall compressor and add freon
3. remove yorkie and disconnect gauge manifold
4. reinstall compressor
5. pop open a beer and swear at those engineers in Germany for not designing it right

In Response to Ruf-Porsche...

...it's a Unicla compressor and a standard York to Sanden adapter plate from Arizona Mobile Air (AMA), a very reputable a/c parts supplier used by many posters on this site as well as posters on airconditioning.com. They sold Sandens for years, but now only sell Seltec and Unicla, as they claim that the number of warranty claims are lower. The dimensions of the compressor appear to be physically the same as a Sanden 508. As you noted, the adapter bracket bolts onto the bracket that was bolted to the bottom of the York. It is of course possible that I've mounted something wrong, but the way I have it test-fitted, the compressor pulley is well-aligned with the crankshaft pulley, and the rear left corner of the Unicla hits the nub on the intake plenum unless the compressor bracket is slid nearly all the way to the right (maximum tightness on the belt). It's possible that the head (the rear cover) design of the Unicla is just slightly different from the Sanden.

Thanks for the input.

If the compressor is not hitting the intake manifold nub when it is all the way to the right, why are you trying to keep it to the left? If the belt is too short, you can always get a slightly larger belt at most auto part store, just bring in the old belt and have them give you the next size belt. It could be that the diameter of the pulley for the unicla is larger than the old york.

See how a Seiki Seiko is install similar to s Sanden
