troubleshooting help...

This story is too long to go into, so I will cut to the chase to keep you all awake!

I have a 73E with a 2.7 in RS type tune, with webers. A while ago the ignition switch failed, and there was a delay in my getting to fixing it. When I finally got that mess taken care of, no start. Upon testing, I have no spark. After much probing and thinking, I deduce the Bosch spark unit isn't working, and decide to replace it, and the points, and after posting here, chose to put in an MSD 6AL, triggered by a Crane optical trigger. An MSD hi vibe coil was used as well.

Yesterday, I carved out enough time to make the bracket, install it all, etc. I double checked the voltages, and accidently bumped the key in the "Start" position, and heard a cough. Talk about excited! First time in over a year that it has done even that!
After I checked the voltages, I gave it a go, and vroom! (LOVE that sound!) it started up, then died. Again I cranked it, pumping the gas, and it started and ran for 2 seconds before dieing ....

I assumed bad gas (hoping it was only that actually!), and flushed the tank, and refilled, still no joy.

So back to the ignition troubleshooting. Trouble is, I can't turn the engine over and be back there to check the Crane units LED, the timing light etc. My arms are only so long! Is there anyway to crank it from back there??

I am presuming I blew up one of the components, but need to findout which, and why.

Sorry this turned out long any way!

Thanks,

You can buy a remote starter switch from your local autoparts store and hook it to your starter and you are set. Takes about a min. to conect the clips.

Jake,

A permanently-mounted remote starter switch is very easy to install -- back on the relay/regulator/CDI panel. The Yellow #50 starter lead [to the starter solenoid] goes thru both of the 14-pin connectors, and is very easy to intercept. Get a bit of +12 Volts from the fuse block and connect to a momentary switch with Yellow #50 on the other side ... and you are all set!

The following diagram may help:

Well, that was the trick. SO much easier to TS intermittant things when you can crank it from the back.

I FINALLY got it running (after way too many months), but am having problems with an MSD 6AL crapping out intermittantly.

Has any one else seen this type of behavior?? (I have checked my connections a gazillion times)
