Great info! I'll drop ACKits a note about the drier and expansion valve.

Jim, is it a matter of disconnecting the hoses at the evaporator and the condensors to flush them using the can, or do you run it through the entire system, hoses and all? (obviously, not through the drier/receiver)

I've been living with the system now for a couple of days, and it is definitely as good or better than it was with R-12, so I'm moving in the right direction...

One can merely disconnect the hoses from the condensers and flush them in place. To avoid making a mess be sure and have a hose attached to the condenser outlet leading to a pan or jug as the flush, oil and debris will come out at a reasonable pressure and flow rate. Wear eye protection! A receiver/drier cannot be flushed and should be replaced. The evaporator can only be flushed if one removes the expansion valve first. The further one gets from the compressor the less oil there is so not flushing the evaporator is a reasonable short cut as long as the desicant bag in the reciever drier hasn't failed and sent desicant beads downstream to the evaporator. After flushing the system one should empty and refill the compressor of oil to ensure that there is enough oil in the system but not too much. Cheers, jim

On the subject of oil, does anyone know how much oil to put in the system if starting from scratch (i.e., system drained and flushed)?

You need to check Sanden website for how much oil to put in for the particular compressor you have. The majority of the oil is in the compressor and the rest of the system really doen't need oil, but the oil is carried throughout the system by the refrigerant. Like Jim said too much oil will hamper the heat transfer need for the system to cool properly, too little oil and you could suffer the black compressor death.

Forgive the pun, but COOL! Thanks!!! Since you guys seem to be able to do everything else, can you do something about all this rain we're getting here? I can't work on the P-car while dodging all the raindrops!
