Went to Maui...saw 3 P-cars....top speed 40 mph.

I just got back from Hawaii.....Lahaina Maui to be exact......spent eight days there with the family.....the only people that missed me must had been the spammers. Had 240 messages////200 were spam and virus bouncers.....

Whole time there, I saw more Ferraris than Porsches......the P-cars I DID see were a nice Orange 71 long nose, a beater 944 rusto bucket and a Boxster. Of course the weenie in the Boxster had his top up, windows up and the A/C on with a friggin' cell phone glued to his ear. He was also the only guy that I saw on the island with a personalized plate.

The Ferraris and other hot rods were puttin along slow.....except for the five mile stretch of road between Kihei and Lahaina....most of the island was 40 mph with a top speed of 55 in that small stretch.....the residential areas were 15-20 mph and the place was a$$ deep in cops. Mostly plain wrapper ones with no door markings.

Anywho, it was hot muggy and the main topic was the possible hurricane coming in.....kinda fizzled out though. Hit the big island and it had some gnarly rain.

The kids loved it and I had some time away from work and all.....glad to be back.

Got to the airport in LA at 10pm and hit the key on the new Yukon.....dead battery....geez, 1 hour later Habib from AAA shows up and I am on my way home....almost 2am now.

Why go to Maui? It's the same as Laguna Beach.

40mph? You caught traffic when it was really hummin! It takes some time but you can really get used to Hawaiian time. After all, where you going to go so fast - it's an island.

I was there a year ago. The only P-car I saw, aside from the Boxster rentals, was a triple black Turbo Cab. I flashed him in my Jeep Cherokee rental but I don't think he got it.

Going back to Maui in March. Everyone should go to Maui at least once in their life.

I saw a really nice red 912 targa at the Starbucks in Kihei last summer. IIRC, I also saw a 356 Speedster once, but not sure anymore.

I would love to have any 911 turbo and race up to the Haleakala summit. It's not quite as fun in a cargo van full of windsurfs, although the V8 was pretty powerful. I don't think the windsurf rental shop would have been happy to hear that there boards were up there, they were fizzing all over the place as the boards were trying to equalize the pressure between sea level and 10,000ft

Next time take the road to Hana...that'll satisfy your craving for twisties for quite some time....

"The drive takes about two and a half hours (with no stops) from Kahului to Kipahulu and requires negotiating more than 600 curves on a road where the speed limit ranges from 10 to 35 miles an hour."

I was hoping to rent a Boxster for the road to Hana next year when I go but I've heard it's too crowded to be any fun. Is that true?

Nate, you can always go up the volcano. It's a great road and REALLY smooth and less traffic as well. If you go after 1 PM or so , you don't have to worry about the cycling tours going down the mountain.

I did one of those Haleakala bike tours last year. Although fun on a bike I did find myself pretending to be in my 911.

I saw this Speedster, but it looks like a replica to me.

As for driving around Maui. You shouldn't miss driving up Haleakala. Even when the summit is socked in, the view from there is amazing.

Been to the islands three times. My favorite is Maui, but the road to Hana ain't what it used to be. When we went the first time, the road from Hana around the backside was unpaved, and we needed to back up a couple of times to let a car come through the other way. But MWBAUM is right, the twisties are ALLRIGHT!!

Now, the backside of the island is all paved, and you share the road with the tour buses. If the rental contracts still say that going around to Hana voids your insurance, they are just nuts. It is as safe going around the backside as it is getting to Hana.

The last time we were there, the trip that was amazing was around the other end of the island. Past Lahaina and all the way around. That has twisties too, but not much traffic. Watch the cliff -- it's a long way down!! That will void more than your insurance.

I rented a Mustang when I was vacationing in Oahu.

The only 911s I saw were Pelican Member, Jeff's '76 (Rufblackbird) and nice red '70T Coupe, parked at Waimea. I've got a photo somewhere. Jeff did take me to a PCA member's place (lee993) for drinks and we drooled over his black C4S...

I was amazed how slowly everyone drives there. It's kinda serene, but everyone should be in Cadillacs! I squirted the Mustang renter upto around 90mph, but at that speed, the body was at sea, floating on the corpses of it's long-dead shocks! I was longing for my 911. The roads and scenery along the North Shore of Oahu are very pretty.

I'm probably going to go back and visit again next April...

Wow, I guess times have changed. I have been to Maui on numerous occasions, however the last time was about 4 years ago. Back then the cops were VERY cool, leaving their constant-blue "traffic" light-bar lights on, (all "marked" cars) so you could see them a mile away (and be less inclined to do anything stupid). I guess they are cracking down on the idiots that ruin it for the rest of us. And there were no shortage of idiots... Each time I did visit, I saw at LEAST one traffic incident involving a tourist/rental car. They must really hate us howlies!

didn't see many p-cars, just a black turbo, but I have to confess, the yellow convertable mustang did a yoeman's job going up and down Haleakala last May. Handling was more nimble than I expected for a car with all the horseys in the front, and something about the throaty revs of a V8....Rental co's will void the contract if you take the southern road to Hana.

Great fish restuarant recommendation - Mama's Fish House. Saw one white SC in the parking lot, so the food had to be good.

Mama's Fish House is fantastic! We went there on the recommendation of our bike tour operator. The food, the wine, the atmosphere. Fantastic. It is already on the short list of must see attractions for our next Maui trip.

I just got back from Oahu last week. I saw about 5 p-cars, I followed a red Turbo slant nose for about 2 miles including one turn from a stoplight where he broke it loose in the damp street. If the guy was on it any more I thought he was going around. All the cars I saw were red. Cool trip, North Shore & Kialua (sp) were my favorites
