Used Parts Condition

I am looking a buying a couple of used mechanical and body parts but the seller wants to charge a small premium because all of the parts will be cleaned and/or prepped for paint.

What sort of 'premium' would you be willing to pay?

The body parts are a fender, bumper, decklid, and spoiler.

The mechanical parts are a-arms and bannanas.

Any input would be appreciated.

What?!! If he bead blasted the suspention parts, I would consider that value added. If he does anything to the fender such as priming, I would consider that an attempt to conceal roughness.

And wouldn't you rather prep yourself (or someone you trust)...done the way you want with products of your choice.

Is this a private seller? If so, perhaps he planned to use and therefore prepped. If a business is selling it's either a way to make extra cash or as Milt suggests.

is he a gypsy? they're out in force doing "bodywork". you know, that rough textured gray stuff with the speckle paint. just a little sanding, and it's ready for paint. rather see the raw product myself, not somebody's idea of "ready for paint".

I'd tell him to skip the prep and send as is.

Are they too far away to go have a look?

I'd hate to be told later:
"Must have been damaged in shipping. Too bad."

They key word in that sentence is "maybe."

Why take a chance on something as important as prep work? You or you painter are going to do it anyways, so why pay for it?

(P.S. Also, the parts aren't currently prepped and he is trying to sell them, so he obviously would not be "cleaning and prepping them" for his own purpose).

The parts are not 'prepped' as of yet, but he will do so at a cost...

I was just wondering what sort of 'upcharge' I could expect if I went this route.

Jerry,
I'm curious what you are paying for the a-arms and the bannanas, I need to buy a set of those as well, I wouldn't pay much for any prep work either.
