Happy days are here again....Long, sorry!
I'm kinda new here....I was originally going to call this "A day late and a dollar short", but I'm so happy that I can't be a pesimist!
FINALLY, I have gotten my old 911's heart pumping again. I had hoped to attend the 911S registries event in Lime Rock Sunday, but didn't quite make it. I bought the car in the early 90s, and knew it needed some TLC. More of a rescue, really. Of course, my plans were rushed forward due to some unplanned damage, and I took on my first restoration. I knew going in what I was up against, and was shocked anyway, but highly satisfied by the end. Three days after it's rushed completion, (which didn't include the engine) I drove the car 3000 miles west to CA. Where I drove it all over as my only car, up and down the coast. Until the engine blew. I was broke, and rode my bike to and from the machine shop picking up parts, reassembling it myself. Grinding con rods and pistons on my apartments coffee table..... As I had never rebuilt an engine, I was thrilled when it merely started! After driving another 20,000 or so miles, a chain tensioner didn't, and it was time for yet another engine. Family responsibilities forced me to move back east, sadly this time with my car on a trailer. Finally, I scratched enough together, met a great guy in Rick Deman who put together a sweet little 2.7 RS type tune motor, and I immediately took it to a track day at Lime Rock. What a joy. But somehow, the car was put in the garage, and the roof on the house needed emergency surgery, family health issues cropped up, and when I finally went to take it for a ride, the ignition switch broke. Then months later, I was able to get that back together, but no joy...no spark. Much head scratching, and a few posts here searching for advice ensued. Parts arrived, but the whole project kept getting interupted, and picking up meant starting over. Finally, I dedicated myself over the past weekend, and while it took too long, (intermittant power supply to the new MSD) the little old car that could has finally risen from it's coma and returned to life. Life is good!! Just moving it... driving it out of the garage...because I could(!) ...was enough to bring back the flood of memories. The smell of the old leather....the smell of the unburned hydrocarbons...(okay, gotta fix that!)....I can't wait to take it on the road and feel the patter of the tarmac through the best steering system I have ever felt! And hear the awesome music of the flat six winding out behind me.... So, I want to thank all you Pelicanites who helped with suggestions on how to get back on the road! Sorry to ramble, I appreciate your patience, but I had to give you guys credit where credit was due. Looking forward to lesser problems..errr, upgrade opportunities!
