993 New England Road Trip

My wife and I just got back from our first major road trip in our 993. We covered 2,521.4 miles in a little over a week, not including mileage floating on 8 ferries. 10 US states, 1 Canadian province (Quebec). Until the return drive from Maine, most miles were not on Interstate highways, but instead were on US, state, and local roads...much more scenic. 7 Porsches encountered on the road, 1 wave, 1 flash. 1 ride in RoninLB's 911 . Thousands of bugs killed. A number of state and national parks, 3 waterfalls, 2 covered bridges. Zero mechanical problems, zero meetings with law enforcement (thanks V1!).

Highlights:
- Overnight stay at RoninLB's house. Long Beach is a great oceanfront community in southwestern Long Island. The ocean;s on one side, the bay and marshlands are on the other. Thanks Ron and Marianne for their warm hospitality! Lu and I will always welcome you two at our house.
- Lime Rock Park for the vintage racing festival. LRP is simply wonderful...the fans sit on the hills overlooking the track. Lots of great spots to watch and no need for ugly bleachers. And the vintage cars...
- Quebec, and the great B&B we stayed at, directly across the St. Lawrence with a view of the city. A very european city.
- The Kennebec and Moose River valley of Maine. Now if I just would've seen a moose in the wild. Oh well.
-Acadia National Park, the Maine coast, and picturesque coastal villages.

Other random observations:
- We met lots of nice people along the way
- The Northeastern US and Quebec are beautiful, even before the typical Fall tourist season
- There's some nice twisty roads in rural (eastern Long Island), in the vicinity of Sag Harbor
- Don't expect to see a lot of wildlife at State and National Parks, unless you're there for quite a while (camping)
- VT route 100, is a great twisty road...just don't run it on a Sunday afternoon. Slo-o-ow.
- Park rangers take the time to answer all your questions
- Sunoco Ultra (94 octane) is cheapest in PA
- The V1 more than pays for itself on a single roadtrip like this
- The 993 can handle a fair bit of luggage for two and a cooler. The seats are marginally comfortable for long drives. Still, I never longed for another car while on the road.
- I wish we had more time...we really wanted to linger longer in most places

I'm glad you had a good trip, Jim. I was actually just going to post in Richard's thread to see how it went (once I saw you had posted). I'm looking forward to the 28th, if they ever get my car back together! I saw on the local board that you are planning on going; I'll see you then!

Glad to hear you're going to come up for the 9/28 fun run. See you then.

I've been trying to post pics of the Lime Rock vintage race cars and a few "993 in New England" pics but my images are not loading right. Aaagh!

Welcome back Jim. Glad to hear it went so well and it sure sounds like a nice trip.

Regarding the pics, make sure they are smaller then 100k otherwise they won't load.

Thanks Doug. It turns out I have a more complicated problem that I'm currently troubleshooting. Once I resolve it, I'll post some pics.

Sounds like a great trip, Jim. Trying to talk my wife into something similar, but she's not going for it in the '85. This leads me to trying to talk her into a newer Porsche, which she also doesn't buy . Maybe if I let her think it was her Porsche. I hear that works for other guys.

Cool

Husband says, "Hey bride. I'm leaving in late April in the 911. Do you want to come or meet me in the Rockys? "

Bride says, " Huh! "

Husband says, " See you later. "

Bride says, " Don't forget to call me."

LOL Ron! Hey guys, Ron's headlight setup on his 911 is great. Excellent brightness on low beams, but doesn't upset drivers of oncoming vehicles. I think this is a future upgrade I'll do on our 73E.

I'm on dial up due to high speed ISP problems. Trip pics will dribble out slowly.

Thanks for everyting, Jim. It's the "road trip" stories I ike: they render life to our cars. And, of course, never fear going away in the Porsche: they are dependable cars, which seem to have the propensity of transforming "2003 touring" into how it used to be: a joyful adventure.

Your absolutely right, Paul. The car ran flawlessly. For this trip, I carried a spare DME relay, some hand tools (not too many as to detract from real luggage needs), my credit cards, AAA membership, flashlights, gloves, and a drop cloth. Good insurance but thankfully unneeded. These cars are great!

The 550 with the Fuchs - real or replica? I have a hard time seeing someone lay out the $$$ for a real 550 restoration and not go all original.
