17" Fuchs?
Do they exist? Can they be built by anyone (HRE) maybe? Since someone here has a black 993 "rs optik" w/ the ducktail, I was wondering if it's possible to take that one step further.

Jack Olsen had a set I think. Hopefully he'll speak up.

HRE sells a Forged Fuch look 3 piece in 17, maybe even 18, I can't remember. I think it is a model 547
Several people including JackO have, I hope I have this right, Lindsey Racing 17" 2 piece wheels. If I remember correctly they cut the center out of a Fuch and weld it into a rim.

That's it. The 2-piece wheels cut the center out of a 16x6 Fuchs, then heat up an outer rim, and let it cool (and contract) down on the center. Then it's welded in place.
3-piece wheels use bolts, and are theoretically stronger. Lindsey makes both pretty reasonably. Picture. Oh, did somebody ask for a picture? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click on any picture for a larger version.

I have the HRE Fuchs replicas on my '76. 8x16 front and 9x17 rear. HRE forges their own Fuchs center rather than using a center from a real Fuchs. I've had them for years and they have been great wheels.
I don't know if HRE still makes them or not - I don't think they're shown on their website. Mike

Thanks Jack. I don't have the 993 just yet, but I'm "just looking around" in case a good, unmolested example comes around. Good to know that 17's are possible with that classic look. I'll look into Lindsey.

HRE still makes them and they are indeed shown on the website as model 311. I'm very tempted by these wheels and recently e-mailed HRE who politely responded quickly. But the prices....ARRGH ![]() ![]() |

Brutal car ![]() Were the centers black as stock or was it a special order? How on earth have you managed to squeeze 245/45x16 in the front wheel fenders? |

So would it be possible to fit these 'aftermarket' Fuchs to a 964 or later?

You can have them made with any backspacing you want, although you'll lose some of the deep-dish look.

Truth be told, HRE actually screwed up on my fronts slightly and made them with a 6.125" backspacing which is way too much. I am now using a .375" spacer, so I have an effective backspacing of 5.75 inches. It works like a charm and the 245/45s fit fine. The black centers were the "standard" color. I asked them if they would paint them continental orange to match the car, but they wouldn't do it (I see they now offer custom colors as an option). Mike
