No smoke from a rebuilt motor, is this right?
As some of you may know, I just installed my rebuilt 3.0L and started it last night. Well, I was expecting it to smoke on the first start up, because the rings are not seated. I warned the neighbor and the wife that it was going to smoke once I started it until the rings seat. So I fired it up, it spit, coughed, and sputtered a few times but , no smoke.
WHY? Should it have smoked a little ? The wrench told me that with new rings smoking on start up IS normal. Thanks Rick

When you rebuild the motor did you use a rebuild lubricant on the new bearing surfaces. When I rebuilt mine it smoked for about 3~5 minutes then cleared up.

I did not rebuild it, I had a wrench rebuild it , so I'm not sure how he did it.

Nope, he shiped it back to me in long block form and I added everything back on. He said that he does not start them up.

Thanks Ronin
I thought the reason that it should smoke was that the rings are not seated and oil comes by the rings and then into the combustion chamber where it ignites with the fuel. But what do I know, This was just my thought. Thanks Rick

Usually they smoke because while rebuilding most of the time, you put a slight coat of oil along the cylinder walls to help lube initial startup. A lot of it burns away after it fires up.

New motors do not always smoke on startup at all. If it has good oil pressure, makes no funny sounds, runs cool and has good power, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If you think about how much assembly oil actually should be in the combution chambers at start up it's not enough to make much smoke. Most of the pre-lube would be in the bottom end.

I used assembly lube on the bottom end parts, and a very very thin coat on the cylinder walls. Used P&Cs, new rings. Virtually no smoke at all, ever. Burns no oil. goes like stink.

Thanks , That makes me fill alot better. I was worried that he sold me a used long block that was not even rebuilt. Yes I'm paranoid. And as for hearing funny noises (avendlerdp's comment) yes I hear funny noises, did I say that I was paranoid. But seriously it does sound all together different than my 2.7 . so I was nervous once I heard it run.

No smoke = no problem.
Those funny sounds are in your head ... tell the gremlins to go away. I always use oil on a rebuild, my motors rarely smoke. There is, however, a slight haze that tends to come from the greasy handprints that burn off the hot parts right after an oil change or rebuild. If you didn't get the haze then you should be REALLY stoked. |

Yes I hear funny noises as well! But paranoia is kind of normal right after you write the big check! (For a car most wives, girlfriends, mothers and other 'responsible' people tell you is a 'silly luxury'!)

The noises are real. Air cooled motors are noisy. Relax.
