Dead center left side damage

Need help bad!

How sturdy is a 930 engine? An 86 930 spun and for the sake of this thread discussion, the car hit a pole right in the middle of the left side and the pole's height is about 3-4 inches from the rocker panel. The left rear also hit the curb 'bending and breaking' the 9" fuchs. The frame is damaged enough for me to not get it fixed.

I was told that the owner floored the pedal, the turbo kicked in, the differential broke, and the car loss steering. So, now with the rear on jackstands, the wheels turn freely. However, the shift lever appears to be stuck in first. I depress the clutch but getting out of gear is impossible. I checked the tunnel but the clearance is very close but not tight enough to freeze the mechanism. I assume that the tranny is shot and needs rebuilding. I know I am unclear but my question should be, "If the tranny is in gear, the accident happens, can an engine damage occur due to being in gear?" I hope I am not in deep Bandini!!

Thanks!

p.s.,

The left side of the engine tin is undamaged. The only engine damage was the fuchs/banana arm hitting the scavenge pump which I have recently replaced. The scope of my exercise is to determine the condition of the engine, the compression, etc. I would rather have the engine running to perform test.
