Indifferent automotive publications?
Guys,
As you know, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the 911. The '73 RS is widely considered to be the greatest 911 ever made, and since I own a reincarnated RS Touring (and, as some might argue, a slightly better 911 than the RS Touring thanks to a stronger chassis), I've written to all of Australia's (appropriate) automotive publications to see if they want to have my car for a few days so that they can write a feature article on it. So far, I've received only one reply: Matt, Thanks for the offer, but we've already done a bunch of stuff on the 911 and we have some fresh items coming up real soon. I'm driving the latest GT3 this Thursday. Also, I don't want to put your car at risk." Are these publications just not interested or can I attribute the lack of interest to a queasiness related to insurance? I'd be happy to try out your car for a few days and publish my impressions in my annual family Christmas newsletter.

Matt,
Would you really, willingly subject your car (and it's RSR clutch) to the ham-fisted, beer-swilling, mindless proliteriat of publications like Wheels and Motor?? ![]()

Your car is too old and slow for thier tastes.
Look at this guy's response. He is getting to thrash a GT3 demo car. |

Brian,
Hahahaha! If you lived in Melbourne, I'd be happy to give you the keys. Seriously. For me, it's not about getting the car in a magazine, but getting people to see how right Porsche got it so many years ago. Adam, Well, I probably wouldn't let Bill Tuckey drive it! 350HP930, As great as the new GT3 is, my car is better because the performance gap is not proportional to the age gap. I live in Melbourne and would like to make a documentatry to celebrate the rare and little known improved 72 RS. Victor will be driving the car, DDR will be filming, and I will be driving the crane. I can safely say there will be no insurance issues.
When can Victor pick up the keys? |

Stuart,
LOL! What do you think of the idea of you, me, Adam, Brett, and Victor all driving each other's cars and putting our impressions down on paper for a special Pelican thread? We could film it, too. And yes, you can drive the crane! Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile |

Vic,
I'll approach the PCV if you're prepared to drive the car (at Calder) and write the piece. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile |

"You break it, you bought it!" LOL
I think that's a pretty good idea. You could throw it open to members with all kinds of 911s.

Vic,
The only catch is that you have to pen the piece. Adam, Let's try and organise something. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile |

Matt,
OK. But by the sounds of it you need someone with a somewhat broader appreciation and circuit experience with modern machinery?

Vic,
"OK. But by the sounds of it you need someone with a somewhat broader appreciation and circuit experience with modern machinery." Well, that sounds like you! Your chariot is fifteen years younger than mine! Having had the weekend to mull it over, I don't know if there's any point in writing something for Porsche Parade -- most Porschephiles already know that the '73 RS and the '74-75 Carrera 2.7 are kick-ass rides. I'm more excited by the idea of making a documentary about the members of Pelican's Melbourne chapter driving each other's cars. All we need is a date and a suitable venue like Ford Australia's proving ground .... Yes, but please bear in mind that we are club "nobodies". The magazine is written by the same people it is about.

I read your piece in "UNIQUE CARS" on the weekend. I was going to ask you if they misquoted you or not about giving your key's to people for a drive ! Well done . I would be really be proud of owning your car. The only thing was that the photo you provided looked like your pre-restored car. |

Fact is that the whole "vintage 911" thing is pretty much "played".
Perhaps there is a version of "Excellence" or "GT" magazine in Australia that would be interested in your car. Other than these specialist 911 magazines, the others really dont care much anymore. |

John,
I can't believe Unique Cars published that letter -- and that crappy image, which, I'm afraid was taken after the restoration. I wrote a letter to WHEELS last month, which was published, but that letter was composed with publication in mind. Weird. I suppose it's better than being ignored or receiving a one-line reply, eh?! If anyone's interested, here's the letter that Unique Cars published. This "letter" was also the winning letter! Apparently I've got a pack of Meguiars car care stuff coming my way. Cool! My car is due for a polish. ![]() Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile Last edited by Matt Holcomb; 09-07-2003 at 09:41 PM.. |
