Jackstand on torsion bar then loud "POP"???

This morning I had jack up my car and placed jackstands under the end of the rear torsion bar, near the radius arm and in the wheel well, as shown on this board. I went to adjust one of the stands a little by raising the car slightly with the jack. Then as soon as I touched the jackstand to move it there was a very LOUD "POP"(???). Is it possible the storsion bar snapped? How can I tell if it is broken? What else might have caused this noise?

I appreciate your help!

Is the car back on the ground again? If the torsion bar is snapped then the car will have sunk, compressing the shocks.

I did drop the car to the ground and it seems to be sitting OK. In searching other threads it seems (and makes sense) that the torsion bar is carrying the weight so as you say, Glasgow 911SC, that corner of the car would/should sink.

Any other ideas what would have caused such a loud POP?

I'll raise the car again and look around, then report back

Is the bar you placed the stands under is actually the torsion bar? I thought it was a cover.

What sort of floor was this on? I had the same sound myself once. Scared me to death, but it was just a small stone that was under the stand that got crushed.

or maybe the car shifted on the pad of the stand slighty due to the shape of the pad.

Hopefully it's nothing, but check your sway bar mounts, one of them might have broke.

Maybe the ratchet and pawl arrangement on the stand popped?

Many times the stand catches on a rough spot or a little debris. Just a tiny movement and the car settles well into the stand's cradle.

This is why we preach gently shaking the car after placing on stands and before beginning work. If this were to have happened while you were under the car yanking on a ratchet handle, it would have scared the crap out of you.

I have some flat-top jack stands, and if you push them too too close to the car body they can hang up on the projecting circular lip of the vertical T-bar cover plate. Happened once to me, car hung then dropped onto the main cylindrical surface. Since then, I leave a small gap between the stand top and the (vertical) cover -- so the car settles only on the projecting cylindrical portion of the tbar assy.
