How does yours sound?
How would you describe the sound of that beautiful flat 6 behind your ears?
Does a sports pre silencer make any difference? Jacob '87 Carrera rumble to burble to howl to scream |
Idling, I would say my Carrera sounds a bit like a VW. You can hear the ticking of the valves (especially in from of my garage door, between two lateral walls. From outside, the single exhaust burbles. From inside, when picking up velocity (don't that ever sound civilized..:D ), there's nothing special to the sound, neither silent nor loud. Just some rather low-frequency kind of rumbling, not unlike some American cars, really... Once the engine warmed-up, when pushing her from 3000 rpm, the engine sounds get louder so as to really start showing agressive tones above 4000 and especially 5000 and by 6000 it's quite a snarl (never a scream, though, like the early "S" cars). When cruising at 80-100 mph (120-160 k), again, nothing really out of the ordinary. Above 100 mph, on the way to reaching high cruising speed of 110-120 mph (180-190 k), the remarkable turbine whistling sound, which I really like, pitches above the quite civilized sporty sounds of an easy 5000 in 5th.
This is a standard Euro 3.2L with factory exhaust. I don't want a louder exhaust, it would render long-distance highway driving too loud, meaning, too tiring. Oh, yes BTW, I had to edit the above to reflect that these notes were jotted down during a very recent trip in Germany :D :D |
Mine, (3.0 engine ssi and dual out), sounds like a sewing machine with an amplifier.
I love 911s, and mine in particular, but the sound does nothing for me. For sound a 12 cyl Ferrari everytime.;) |
Am I the only one whose fan noise is quite noticeable? Sometimes I think I have a turbine in the back from the noise generated by the fan.
|
At low sppeds the fan can be most irritating - thats why I drive as fast as I can!

At start up:

Mine's so loud that prior to putting in 16 square feet of B-Quiet Lcomp sound pad in the car, my ears would be ringing after even a few minutes driving. Its tolerable now, but if my window is down, and I'm driving next to a jersey barrier, its uncomfortably loud in the car.
A friend told me on Saturday that driving behind my car sounded like having a couple Harley's screaming past him at high revs on the highway, with his windows down. Except his windows were up. I like it. :D Edit: Oh yeah, its a weber carbed 2.0L with stock guts and S-cams, no idea on the exhaust, but its got 3" or 3.5" single outlet big enough to stick an orange into. And boy it sounds nice at 6000rpm. |
Loud Whirrr of the air intake...changes tone based on rpms. + low explosive drone underneath it.
The valve train is very quiet and can only barely be heard when going through tight spaces against the wall. Other P cars Ive heard are much louder in valves racketing around. |

After 5000 rpm..... like God ripping sheets of canvas with his bare hands. |
Upon start-up and idle, it reminds me of those old Spitfire radial engine aircraft...deep rumble, sorta like it has a radial cam. I really enjoy that whine that comes from the engine when rowing through the gears. I had a 944 that made the same noise...total music to the ears.
|
SRiser: I've thought the same thing... sounds so much like an old airplane engine...
|
dotorg: Yep. I could sit and listen to it idle all day. It is such a great sound.
|
With the stock 2-in 1-out muffler: Quiet. Whine from the fan. In fifth gear above 80-85, a subtle but beautiful growl/purr.
With the Triad: At idle, kinda like a V8 or Harley. Under 3000, drone. Above 3000 and especially at 4, 5 and 6k, like a race car. Kinda F1-ish. Fan noise and all other noises are essentially gone. One of the most beautiful sounds I have heard. |
My motor has to be one of the quietest motors ever. Can't hear it, at all, not one sound. No vehicle made today is as quiet as my car............................................... .............and it's probably because i have yet to put my motor back together :D.
|
Sewing Maching on Steroids inside the car. I can never hear any valve noises. Outside it is like a loud bassy (Bass-EEE) burbling, with a fan in the background. Very unique, that is one engine noise I can always pick out!
|
Depends... at 0.65 Bar when the Andial Fuel Enrichment system comes on and the Turbo is at full speed... like a jet engine on full afterburner!
Complete with flames too might I add. All I need is the Top Gun sound track and I start looking for runways to take off from. |

Cruising along at 4-4.5K produces an amazing sound. Today I heard a highschool kid yell out, "Nice Porsch!" Of course I was really close to Newark so he'll probably stop by my house tonight while I'm asleep.

Above 5 grand? Sounds like the Hounds of the Baskervilles being castrated.
