Cheapest Rebuilt Alternators?

Where is the cheapest place to get a rebuilt alternator? I have a core. I noticed pelican doesn't have them anymore.

Do a search on here. I recall someone found a place out east that was less than $100

Be careful with your selection. Some "rebuilders" are better than others. The 90 day warranty that only gets you another crappy rebuild to replace the last one is no warranty at all.

A good rebuild will have bearings replaced, no visible armature / rotor wear and in general looklike a new unit...

When I was looking at the possibility of rebuilding my alternator, I found local auto electric shops that were willing to rebuild it for under $50. They basically said it's a Bosch, and they do them for several makes and models...had the parts on hand....wasn't a problem.

Hey Terry,

What does it fit? I might have it even though it's not listed on the website.

I just had the alternator in my 84 rebuilt for $85 (actually, they did an exchange for that price). One year warranty. So far, so good.

Foreign Alternator and Starters in Northridge, California. It was a dingy little shop, but the guy seemed to know his stuff!

I second the local alt shop doing the rebuild. Any place worth it's salt will test the unit (many time with you there) on the bench and tell you what they can see right off the bat. If you have a problem you can deal with them a bit easier than if they are across the country.

I found a great place through the yellow pages. If have no luck in your immediate area then go to the library and get the yellow pages for neighboring, more industrial areas.

Yahoo has a yellow pages service that's pretty good. You put in your zip code, and then a search term (such as "alternator") and it will give you nearby shops, with the closest ones being listed first. That's how I found the shop where I bought mine.

The problem is that I don't think mine is rebuildable. Its the original and in bad shape.

Terry: As long as the physical structure of the alternator is intact, you have a shot at having it rebuilt. Find a local rebuilder and play dumb. Take it in, tell them it's dead, and ask them to rebuild it. Let them tell you it's not rebuildable...don't assume that's the case. Also, the shop might just sell you one outright (if they have one on the shelf) for the cost of the rebuild plus the core charge.

These names came up when I did a Yahoo search for your area:

Autolectric
(239) 597-6617
5791 Taylor Rd
Naples, FL

Naples Auto Electric Inc
(239) 775-5599
3126 Davis Blvd
Naples, FL

Naples Battery & Alternator
(239) 643-4588
3637 Prospect Ave
Naples, FL

Give 'em a call or just walk in....you might be pleasantly surprised! Good luck.

Give the guys at Pelican a call. I'm sure that they can get one for you. WorldPac (wholesale distributor) has 20 rebuilt Bosch alternators in stock that are for a '76 911S.

It should run you a little over $200 with a $125 core charge. YMMV

If Pelican can't get you one, try Vertex. Also, these guys are a big operation here in So Cal. http://www.socalaltandstart.com/ They were pricey though...$249/exchange.

I'll jump in one last time...I second going to the shop and playing dumb. First, they're going to test the alt (that's how I found out mine was still ok), second, it's DOA...guarantee, they'll say time to buy a new one.

Of course Pelican has them. Rebuilt for $180 with a $40 dollar core charge. Damn shipping is expensive on a 17lb part!
