Is it possible to do without special tools?

Has anyone perfected a method of getting the cam nut off without having to use the special cam tools? It seems to me it should be possible.

Get it off-maybe. You risk messing up some expensive parts. But setting cams correctly, I can't see how unless you fab your own tools. That might cost more than the cam tools. So If you have to put it back together with them, why not take it apart with them?
