Pelican Rental vs. Private Rental

Well, I have not heard anything more about PP's planned rental program. So what do you guys think about renting to each other. I know I would not mind renting transmission rebuilding tools from a fellow Pelican (some would say we do not need these but heck, it helps).

So, in addition to the infamous WTB (wanted to buy), WTS, can we add WTR (wanted to rent)/NTRT (need to rent tool)?

Instead of freezing and heating, I have the bearing puller from Pelican and do not mind renting it out.

If there is enough interest, anybody else has something to rent?
1. bearing puller/installer.
2. transmission rebuilding tools.
3. Gunson gas tester.
4. Cornering balancing scales.
5.
6.
7.

If this thread turns into a dud, oh well.....I tried.

I would love to rent a Gunson gas tester. However, I live on the East Coast.

I have been wanting to test my mixture since I got the car 6 mos ago.

I actually brought this up quite a while ago and even started working on an on-line database so folks could request stuff and we could track who has it in case someone else wanted to borrow it before being sent back to the owner. My suggestion was that the renter pays all shipping costs and agrees to replacement if lost, etc. I may have lost the database stuff when I lost my drive

I also have...

1. Front wheel bearing race installer set
2. Bearing packer/grease
3. 27mm steering wheel nut socket
4. Rear axle castle nut socket (36mm I believe)
5. 36mm ride height adjustment wrenches
6. -12 AN aluminum fitting wrench
7. Digital multi-meter with duty cycle
8. Adjustable timing light
9. 1/2" breaker bar

I'm for it as well. Setting up regions would be smart so that the tool doesn't have to criss cross the entire country.

I agree that this is a great idea. Sometimes a necessary job is hindered by the cost of specialized tools. This plan could alleviate would-be DIYers of that additional stress, and promote greater mechanical knowledge of these vehicles.

An online database would be key and some sort of user agreement should be drawn up. After all, honor systems aren't always honest, and tools often do break. Whether this becomes a borrow or rental system, late fees should have some influence, even if proceeds go straight to charity. Initially, the management of these procedures may be crude, but eventually, it could be beneficial to all of us.

That being said, who's got the Gtech?

I would be nervous to rent out my engine mount (other than locally) unless the full price was deposited. Does this seem fair? Maybe we could use Pay pal to escrow money? Not sure how that works

So, how about this:

1. DIY contacts whoever has the needed tool(s).
2. DIY prepays 100% of tool cost plus shipping.
3. Rental fee will be agreed at say 15% (or 20%, or....) of tool replacement cost per week. (Hey, give us slow worker time to drink our Tequila!).
4. DIY returns the unit.
5. Owner inspects the units for damages.
6. Owner refunds unused $$ from Step 2.

Conditions:
1. DIY - u break it, u own it! No if's or but's.
2. DIY - u damage it, you own it.
3. If you damage it but it still works, contact the owner before shipping/return. Owner has the right to conditions #1 and 2. So save yourself shipping cost by contacting the owner.
4. DIY and owner can agree on damage cost. Owner can take back unit at no additional cost, or only taking the unit at repair cost.
5. No begging! Such as "It is only a dent!", "it is only a scratch!" "It is only a cut wire but I soldered it back." CONDITIONS 1 AND 2 rule all the time.

NOTES:
Renters. Don't be cheap! It only cost one dollar ($1.00) for every $100.00 for insurance with UPS. The first $100.00 is free with shipping.

Criss-crossing the country could be a problem. However, if I recall correctly, renting units from rental place is over 40% of buying your own.

Small items should be advertised also. When I mean small, it would be the "Cheaper to buy one due to shipping cost." Hey, advertising small items is still beneficial to your Pelicanite neighbors (ex., "Dude, I am 10 miles away from you. I'll pick-up!" DO THE MATH!

Isn't it easier to just cycle the tools thru the classifieds? . . .Making it all simple; like a used text-book exchange. (?)

I agree. Let the renter set the rental fee, and have that part of the listing so people can lend rather then rent.

I've been loaning tools out for years but only locally to people I know. I'm too generous to take anyone's money and I'm too busy [sounds so much better than lazy doesn't it?] to ship stuff. I wouldn't depend on UPS insurance to pay if your tools get lost or damaged.

I think used Porsche tools come up for sale surprisingly rarely.

Try networking a little more in your local PCA region. Someone in your town may have the tools you're looking for and be a source of help and advice on your project.

I have one of the infamous engine yokes that I would consider adding into the mix.
And the giant cam nut crows foot with socket.
I was in Hershey at the 968 tech session and they have a rental program for some kind of belt tightening tool.
I think the deposit should be greater than the replacement cost so a tool doesn't get lost.

Does anyone know any 968 guys (I try to keep my distance from the water pumper group)?

If you need a website to be the repository for the plan you can use mine.

www.911t.org

Note: I just moved the site this weekend and am still moving files so some links don't work well.

It's a great idea, but it will only work until a renter returns a tool and some knucklehead owner doesn't return the deposit. Then the flaming will begin!! As long as the spirit of this board guides people, I think some sort of loaner/rental tool program would be great.

A friend of mine used to rent out the $350 944 belt tension tool. The first one got lost in shipping somehow. I don't think he ever saw any money for it. He got another tool donated to him and he continued the service.

I have a bottle opener that says "oh yeah!! time for a beer!!" when used. I would be happy to rent that out but not for more than an hour or two at a time; it seems to be one of my more frequently used tools . . .

This idea is great, but seems like it would work best organized on a local level. Sounds like something that could be a PCA/POC thing - rent tools, and use the money from the rentals to pay off the price of the tools and buy new ones.

Having used to own a tool rental company, I ought to chip in a couple cents.

Jazzbass is correct, it's best done on a local level, otherwise your talking about a logistical nightmare trying to remember where/when/who has the gas analyzer, what part of the country it's currently located in, and unless there's some incentive to return it, someone (it'll happen...trust me...) whether it be benign or not, will forget that they have something needed, or will fall into the "get around to it"s of sending it back.

Everyone here is of the highest integrity (well maybe...just don't let it get around....), but the first time you need that fly-wheel puller that used to hang in your garage, and your remember that it's out on loan somewhere on the continent, your gonna be a little miffed....

If I were doing it, I'd set it up in the form of a local "Lending Library" of tools. Kind like your public library, handled on a local level through the local PCA's.

Thoughts?
