Sport muffler paint bubbling...

I got the sport muffler from our host. It's made by Dansk. Put it on last night, went for a 20 min drive. Got home, and the black paint on the tips was a bit soft (like freshly-curing paint). What was worse was the bubbling and peeling of the paint in the back of the muffler. It has occurred in the place where the exhaust from the heat exchangers "shoots" right into the muffler. It can be seen from the rear as two large (audio CD-sized) patches of bubbling and peeling paint.

The paint on the tips is fine, but the muffler spots continue to bubble and peel. Has anyone else had this problem? If that continues I see no other remedy than to take it off, sand the offending areas and put some real high temp paint. I've seen BBQ grill paint withstand plenty of such abuse with no problems.

Wayne, Danksman.... anyone?

Dave,
I haven't heard of this happening before. We've had this aluminized steel sport muffler out for a while now, and haven't had any paint issues. Can you email me some pics ASAP? or better yet, will you be at the German AutoFest this weekend?

Hi Dave,

The paint thats comes on the mufflers is only to protect it from rusting on the shelf, it doesn't do very well in a hi-heat environment. We sell the WURTH Hi-Temp paint that works very well. Comes in silver and flat black.

I believe the muffler Dave has is a new type of sport muffler that we came out with last year. The finish is painted in a hi-temp crinkle black paint, and two center-out tailpipes which are also painted black. This paint is not like what you mention, and should hold up.

Just noticed you're from Boston, so I probably won't see you this weekend! I am leaving tonight, but please send me some more info, or call me at 530-676-7246 and I will get back to you when I'm back in the office on Tuesday. Thanks.

On my custom sport muffler I have to repaint that area where the exhaust comes in weekly!!! That part of the muffler must get very very hot! I use 1200 degree paint "with ceramic" that's supposed to work, but it keeps bubbling and peeling from that area. I assume it will get a hole blown in it at some point and I'll have to break out the welder!
