Need heat exchanger install help!

I have a 1980 SC and I just removed the rusted heat exchangers. I didn't break any studs! I need to know which way the gaskets go. The gaskets between the HE and the head are smooth and polished on one side and dull with a ring in the middle on the other. Which side goes towards the head? The old ones fell apart and gave me no clue. I bought them from our host.

Thanks to all.
