Porsche Crest 1970 911t almost here

I recently purchased my dream car. A 1970 911t , fully rebuilt and restored. The problem is , that the previous owner lived in Alberta at a high altitude. He said that the carbs were balanced and tuned recently. I know that when I get this car it will need to be adjusted. Can one of you fine people assist your newest member in his first maintenance task?

Thanks in advance

Michael

Nice car! The ride height is a little high but that's ok gives you lots of work time to bond with your new car.

sorry can't really help you with the carbs since I don't know them at all.

the first thing to do with the carbs is to figure out whether you have Zeniths or Webers. Next, is to find out what settings you have. This will include the sizes for air correction jets, emulsion tube, main and idle jets. this will require mild disassembly to read the numbers on the parts.

There is a blow up weber diagram here:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/911_1969.htm

The carbs are easy to disassemble. Just do one side at a time so that if you make a mistake you have another carb to look at for reference.

Since altitude has less oxygen than FL Sea level, I suspect your car is now running lean. It is getting more air than fuel. You will probably notice that they stumble and possible pop through the top of the carbs. you can richen up the mixture by opening the idle bleed screws. If it still runs lean higher than about 3.5K rpm then it will need larger main jets.

Once we know your current sizes, we can make recommendations for changing them. You may be able to call the PO or his/her mechanic and get the jet settings.

Oh yeah, Love the early cars in silver. Looks like you found a good one. Any rust underneath? Best part is that you are coming up on the "winter" driving season in FL.

No rust, new gas tank, new floor boards, new just about everything, but alas, NO A\C. One sight has estimated $4000 in parts to retro-fit a\c on a car that never had it.... Night only be a winter car...

Thanks for the advice on the carbs. I thought about getting Webers even if the car comes with Zeniths, but because I know nothing about any of this yet, I am waiting. I also just bought a book on Weber Carb rebuilding. I have rebuilt a dozen different M\C carbs, but never for an auto.
We'll see,
Thanks for the compliments. Lets hope the car looks this good when its delivered. Its still in Canada and about to board a car carrier to FLorida this Monday.

Michael, the carbs will be easier than a M/C since the parts are larger and easier to manipulate. If you have torn down a carb, these will be easy. The Zeniths will run well if set up right. No need to change unless you want to spend the money or if you are changing the specs on the engine. Keep us posted when you get the car.

Welcome to the T club. Believe or not, I always wanted an early T and finally got one a couple of years ago.

Is a T really my dream car?

Yes, but so is a 67S and a SC.

The only thing I would change, would to have a Targa. Congrats on your new Porsche and don't be offended when others say, "It's just a T." It's a all-around awesome car!
