Shift coupler bushings???
Just looked again at my gear shift coupling under the rear cover in the back of the P car and there is a bit of side to side movment. Is there ment to be any movment there and if I need to replace the coupler can I just replace the bushing?. I had a look at Pelican Parts list and there is what they term as sharft coupler bushes. Is this what I need to order?
I'm in the UK so just to call is not on Cheers Steve |

The original coupler had an elongated bushing hole. When I removed mine I assumed it was wear, but after breaking the coupler and oredring a new one, the new bushings has the same elongation. Supposedly this was to absorb any of the vibration from the transmission to the driver. The replacement bushings do not have this elongation. Not sure if they make much difference?? After breaking the first one I was not in a hurry to replace the bushings!

Pelican carries a set of bushings which do not have the elongated holes. They feel a tad more tight than the OEM bushes. The reason the factory made the holes elongated was to reduce noise in the cockpit from the transmission. By elongating the holes, they reduced the amount of vibration transmitted to the shifter.
I don't notice that it's all that much louder.

If you know anyone with a small lathe, you could just make some out of brass, they work great!

OK, am i missing something, i'm aware of what bushing your talking about, but i thought the ones there were pretty damn hard. Why would you replace them?

The coupler bushings are made of medium hardness plastic and they wear.

Because the dissentigrate over time, then there is no bushing and no gear selection! They are not as good as solid metal, consider the difference between a monoball suspension bushing and poly bushings.

I fortunately had a replacement coupler when my original 1967 bushings went south...I was able to dig the reminants out with a screwdriver...they felt like wax. I have a coupler that could use a set of bushings now...when the next set goes I'll be getting nice brass ones.

You can replace the bushing without replacing the coupler. Mine was worn also. I recommend buying the complete kit from Pelican, as I did, and enjoy the improved shifting.
