Is this a common occurrence?

Every week for the last 2 years I drive 120 miles each way to work. I am usually driving an extra cab Chev doing about 130KPH. Occasionaly I get passed by some going faster but they never go screeming by me. Last week I drove my 911 to work and doing about 80MPH I was passed by so many cars I lost count. Now these cars did not just pass me the flew by me, I would estimate most were doing 100MPH but the odd one was faster like a PT Cruiser that must have been doing 120. Is it just me or do some people when they see a 911 want to show how fast a car they are driving and put thier foot into it.

You are just not driving fast enough.

I thought that might be the problem, but I still need my drivers licence because my wife won't drive me to work.

Ahh a newbie. You come to find that people will fly up behind you, slow down to your speed for a second or two, and then punch the gas to get around you. Even if your in the slow lane and there are no other cars on the road. The best part is when you look over at them they give you an evil stare. Don't worry, after a year or so it won't bother you as much.

Yep, that's believable. I tend to drive at about the 70th percentile, or 80th. That is, 20% of cars are going faster than me. That gives the bears something to eat besides yours truly and reduces my stress level. About ten percent of cars goose their throttle as they're moving past me. I think the purpose of that is to show me how powerful their Tauruses are.

On a side note, if I want to see cars going REALLY fast, I drive my '73 Datsun pickup, with the primer black fenders and rust holes in the doors. It was not designed to cruise at 85-90 mph but it will if I ask, and you would hardly believe the lengths other drivers will go to, in order to pass that little pickup.

What bothers me is the fact that I can drive 10-15+ MPH over the speed limit in my pickup or suburban all day long and not get pulled over, but I have been ticketed for 10 over in a porsche. In fact, I was getting passed by a van the last time I was pulled over. Now I trailer my 911 to the track, it's faster.

It's also amazing how a rogue vehicle will appear when I am trying to merge.

One of the beauties of the SSI's and GHL muffler is that all tailgaters get to experience the thrill of my untreated exhaust and noise.

This happens to me a lot on I-5, I just smile and wave them by. Rather make their day so they can tell their friends they passed a Porsche than getting pulled over by a state trooper. Nothing really to prove.

Don't discount the optimism of the Porsche speedometer. My '87 runs on the high side by close to 10 mph.

Exactly. You probably are really doing 70 while you THINK you are doing 80!

I just give 'em a sidelong glance and shake my head so they can see that I think they're morons. This tends to piss them off and they further increase their speeds. However, once they've passed me they slow down, and my constant 75mph speed eventually proves fast enough to catch - and sometimes pass - them.

Aesop was right: "Slow and steady wins the race."
