Sun Roof wind Noise
There is a small metal flap/strip that pop up when I open the sunroof on the 1982 SC. This seems to generate a lot of noise on the highway. I can put my hand up and rotate it down and the noise level drops off. Is this supposed to pop up? Is there a way to keep this down?
James

You can take it off; but realize it does have a purpose.
Its intent is to produce a small amount of turbulance (to the air) . ..with it off you will experience some nasty low freq. resonance. (at certain speeds, your cabin becomes a kind of giant whistle). This resonance can usually be defeted by cracking a window (or 2) open.

Hmmmm. I supposed I can fabricate a clip to hold it down. This just seems an in elegant solution.

Believe me, I've had the same thoughts. At freeway speeds, it really makes a lot of noise.
I know that some of the later Carreras got a supposedly improved version (air-deflector).. .don't know if it's all that much better, but I do know you can udate an SC with that version.

You guys have inspired me to experiment.
I’ve always thought the sunroof air foil, I just made that name up, is too noisy so this afternoon I decided to take it off. Removing it only takes a few minutes and I ran a quick errand afterwards. I only got the car up to 60mph, but here is what I noticed. As you might expect, with the sunroof open the car is much quieter now. However, a very pleasant, unexpected benefit was better air circulation in the cabin. The air has always been a little still in my sc even with all the windows open. It was fun to feel a little breeze which helps contribute to the overall feeling of movement as your going down the road. Next outing I’ll go on the freeway and see what happens when I go a little faster. If you read any stories in the newspaper of a guy sucked out of his car you’ll know it was me. |

my stock deflector makes more noise than my brothers '88.. and I've spent weeks traveling in that car.. so I have a new/old Carrera deflector that hasn't been installed yet.. I never thought of removing it till now.
The wind noise is unwanted distorted tunes IMO.......Ron

What if you drilled a series of holes in the deflector ? Would this make the wind noise quieter and still allow the deflector do it's intended job ?

In a word - no
Nope, this thing just needs to lay flat when not needed. James

I read this thread last week knowing that I had a 2 1/2 hour drive coming up on Saturday. Crusing at 70-75mph I reached up and pushed the deflector down (80SC metal one), and it was a bit quieter, but the wind blast came down and hit me in the top rear of my head. Didn't like that at all. Tried it several times. One time I held it down for a long time, and it really bothered me. Sounds like the solution, if any, is to upgrade to the later black plastic deflector.
