German AutoFest -- Pictures, Video
Another great year at the German AutoFest. This year, there was an R-Gruppe/Early S Registry/Anyone-Who-Wants-To-Come caravan up from San Diego and Los Angeles, as well as an afternoon drive and dinner, organized by R Gruppe.
About 25 cars gathered at 6:30 am at Paramount Ranch. Tha San Diego contingent met us there. ![]() Then we made the drive to the Camarillo Airport, where we met still more guys. Pelicanite WolfTurbo was there with his new Kelly Green RS, as well as his Emerald Green 74 Euro Carrera. ![]() ![]() Nice, huh? ![]() There were about 25 cars that met at the airport. ![]() Here's a 3.5 meg video clip of me walking through the cars at the airport. And here's a 1.3 meg video clip of me driving past the cars at the airport. Then we had a drivers' meeting for the trip to Ventura. Here's a self-portrait form that: ![]() Sam is back in the saddle. He brought his Lagoon Green Turbo Look. ![]() Then he took a group picture. ![]() As always, click on any thumbnail for a larger version. Dick Moran had his black 73T there. The car is kind of like BB1, but with a beautiful twin-plug 2.9, and absolutely gorgeous period-correct details. Imagine getting a brand new Porsche in 1973. Now imagine it about 500% better than the best they had to offer that year.
The motor might look like this: ![]() The rest might look like this: ![]() (And for the record, pictures do not do this car justice. Pelicanite 'Ted Drake' (aka Mike) had his new street-car black Turbolook: ![]() Jim Planet had his black car done up for track use: ![]() Here's a 1-meg video clip of the cars on the freeway on their way to the AutoFest. Once there, the early cars got special parking:
![]() BB2 parked next to Dick Moran's masterpiece: ![]() As always, there were cool cars: ![]() This is an event where if you want to see a particular 911 variant, like the RS America, you can probably find a whole bunch of them: ![]() You could also find Pelicanite Chuck Moreland's Gulf Blue and Orange show car: ![]() ![]()

There's really no point having a 911 if you can't live in California.
Chuck's car certainly came up a treat. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile |

I am quite envious of all you who got to the Autofest. Let me share my tale of woe...So I decided last week that I would go to the Autofest this weekend as the body shop said I would get my '91 C2 back on Wednesday. I figured it would be a nice shakedown cruise from the Bay Area after getting the C2 tagged and keyed by some kids. I thought I would stop in Santa Barbara on the way to visit an old friend and stop in SLOtown at Cal Poly, my alma mater. Well, the body shop first changed their completion date to Friday and then, when I checked Thursday afternoon, they said, yeah, well...it's to hot to paint and we're backed up, so now it's next Thursday. Should have cut my losses then... OK, so I decided, well it would still be fun, so I got the bimmer commuter car ready to go and left about 9:00am Saturday as I planned a leisurely trip down and would only attend on Sunday... At about Salinas, I called my SB friend's cell and he answered from Utah!!! He was on a road and would stop in the bayarea for a visit on his way home. So much for advanced planning!!! As I was ruminating over that disapointment, now about 10 miles south of Salinas, I noticed the red "Engine" warning light on and the temperature gage pegged. I quickly pulled over, fortunately under the only tree on the 101 freeway for miles, and popped the hood. Sure enough, and ironically, the water pump and fan belt were gone and coolant was everywhere. So I called AAA and they said, "well, you're kind of rural, so 1 1/2 hours until we get there." When the tow got there, about 1:00pm or so, I asked him to take me to a shop that could fix the Bimmer. He laughed and said that he could get it fixed if it was a tractor, but a Bimmer on Saturday...no way. He suggested I take it to a recommended shop 10+ miles back in Salinas and I agreed. Since it was more than 5 miles, it cost me $75 for the tow and I left it in the Autowerks shop parking lot, keys in the slot, in Salinas, where I'll have to go next weekend to pick it up. So I called my wife, forgetting that because I was going south, she went out of town to visit friends, my son's cell was off, and I'm 100 miles from home, so I decided to try and rent a car and still go to the Autofest. But, all Car Rental shops in Salinas are closed on Saturday. So I asked a few people about transportation and they said that if you hike it over to the "Steinback" center (I had my trusty suitcase/backpack on), there is a bus station... True enough, but no bus service except to Monterrey, about 20 miles to the west, on the coast. It's now about 3:20pm and I had given up getting to the Autofest and just wanted to get home. At 4:15pm the bus showed and I asked the bus driver fi there was some kind of bus service to the bay area from Monterrey and he said, "not really", but he had a scheduled stop at the airport and maybe I could rent a car there. Soooo, I called ahead and, yes they could reserve a car, and took the bus. I got to the Monterrey airport about 5:00pm and...the rental firm I had contacted said they had made a mistake and there was no car for me. None of the other rental firms had any cars, but, Budget said that if I wait, they may have a no show and I could get that car. Finally, about 6:30pm, the attendant relents and I got the car. Finally, I arrived back home, at about 8:30pm, almost 12 hours after I left, out about $125 for towing, the car rental, the room reserved by Crdit card, and facing a further bill for the Bimmer in Salinas and needing to get there next weekend to pick it up. Nonetheless, What is it Dorothy said, oh yeah, "There's no place like home! There's no place like home...

ckrause,
Great story! I think I have had days like that as well. You should put that story at the head of it's own thread, so it can be truly appreciated!

I concur on Dick Moran's car. I have a pic or two in my collection I posted...absolute beauty. Chuck's car however get's my vote for "woody of the show". For those that have followed the resto project, let me tell you that it looks awesome in person.
Plus there was the added bonus of other various Pelicans: ![]() ![]() ![]() My "find" was the fact that Wayne had a few Prototipo wheels left, so I picked one up for $199. O |

Found one more picture of Dick Moran's car:
And one of our fearless leader, Cris Huergas, who came down from northern California for the event. Both he and R Gruppe co-founder Freeman Thomas were there. In this picture, you can also see Roger Grago and Randy Wells, who was down from up north. I was glad to be asked to take Cris Huergas as a passenger on the afternoon run. Fortunately, I didn't do any high speed pirouettes, this time.

It was my first year attending the AutoFest and I had a blast. It was good to see everyone and all the nice cars. I absolutely can't wait to get my car back from TRE with it's new shoes. We gotta do another Santa Barbara Run soon guys.
Last pic from Sunday afternoon as everyone is clearing out...

Hi Bob, sorry I missed you. On Sunday, I was poking about periodically in the swap meet. Looking for some good H4's and a couple other things, but no luck. Yea, that red Carrera was very, very nice - regardless of the exhaust, but quite a looker with it. I had a couple people come over to our area that had just heard that car running, and wanted some info on the muffler.
