Engine Rebuild Complete!!
Its been 6 months exactly since the engine came out for some minor R&R which eventaully turned into a full top end rebuild. All is left is to install the CIS, lift it back into the car and break her in.
Many thanks to the Pelican BBS, Competition Engineering and Rennsport Systems for their advice and answering many of my newbie questions. Charlie, thats great. Can't wait to see it on the road in a few weeks. Did the sale of Richard's Carrera prompt you to finish it up?
btw, what finish is on the fan/surround? Did you get them powder coated? Looks great. |

Richards Carrera was the impetus for finishing it up. It was my garage-->work commuter for a few weeks;) Thanks, Richard.
The sheet metal is powder coated. The fan/housing and the intake runners were bead blasted then clear coated with clear VHT polyurethane wheel paint. Supposedly very durable. We'll see if the mag. fan/housing oxidizes through it. |
I think the disease needs to be renamed "Stylianositis". You guys think I have it bad. Charlie started out with your run of the mill engine drop to install SSI's, new clutch, Carrera tensioners and a few seals. I vividly remember heading over to his garage on the way to meet a date. While over there, the date called and cancelled and so I hung around to help remove the heat exchangers. That's what started it. We were drinking beer, staring at the engine on the stand with no heat exhangers on and I told him we were so near that we might as well.... Yeah, you know what happened. A few days later I was over there and there was nothing but a case on that stand. I never had the disease that badly.

You bast@rd, i'm jealous, i still have like 4 months or so to go. I guess it's my fault since i sent my parts to a small porsche machine shop instead of competition where they could have turned it around faster.

All I can say is WOW. That engine looks beautiful.
BTW, I did the same exact procedure with my fan and housing. It will show signs of oxidation, but very minimal and over a couple of years. Humidity will influence this quite a bit. All in all it is a very durable coating. |

Fastred - CE is a small shop and Walt does most of the intricate work himself. You'll probably wait a little longer going with CE but the work is definitely worth the wait.
Greg - The JE's are a wedge shape for improved atomization and supposedly work very well with CIS. The picture above does not really show the wedge too well. I had the same question when I ordered them through EBS and was told these are JE's CIS pistons. I think Noah is using the same (9.5:1 CR) JE's in his CIS Carrera 3.0 with VG results. Also recommended in Wayne's book as an upgrade option for CIS. Chuck - CE did machine work. My man hours to put it all back. |
Yikes! Looks outstanding. Is the red shroud refinished in some way?
Many of you guys around here doing rebuilds are turning into engine detailing maniacs. Don't let that gleaming motor turn you into a garage queen. :p My motor isn't half that flashy and I get all sorts of ribbing, implying my car's some kinda garage queen. |

Definitely no garage queen here. Built it as a fun and aggressive street/track mobile. Just want it to look nice when the hood is open between sessions;)
The detailing really didnt take that much time: Drop/pick up the sheet metal from the p-coaters New engine hadware kit from Pelican One day for bead blasting and painting misc items Shroud is painted Ruby Red. Looks blood red w/o the orange tint of guards. Rough HP estimates: SSI's/Sport Muffler +15 HP SC330 Cams +10 9.7:1 CR +15 Hoping for around 220HP @ flywheel....conservative |
if you opened up the case i bet you have over 170 to the ground [from experance]

Looks great. I'm taking a bit of "artistic license" with my sheet metal paint scheme...we'll see how it turns out. I could always just let it get dirty and stay that way.
How did you do the upper valve covers?? I really like that black with gray lettering. I've seen others do it too. |
