I just completed drilling out ten 1.5 inch holes in my airbox lid, and surprisingly, i DON'T hear any "whoosing" or "hisssing" sounds that others are describing. Is this sound only at WOT?
Also, i noticed a change in my exhaust note to a lower frequency, burbling sound. My 3.2 only has a Steve W. chip and Flowmaster muffler. Seems the exhaust note is a little quieter too. Is it all in my mind? I don't recall others describe a noticeable change in exhaust note with just the drilled airbox lid. I liked the slightly higher pitched mechanical growl that my car emitted with a full airbox lid, compared to the burble it has with drilled lid. Luckily, the drilled one is on a differerent lid i just purchased. Others? Thanks Mike 3.2 coupe |

What you probably hear is intake noise. I drilled my airbox and it was too loud, so I cut the whole front of it off to expose the filter and now it sounds much better.

I noticed a big difference with my modified airbox. Cut the whole face of it off. Much more "inhaust" noise. Kinda weird.
It was fun at first but then it felt kinda silly to me. Let's see what Jeremy thinks of his "new" setup.

I like the two together (dual out, dansk premuffler) Much more throater and actually sounds like a sports car now.- Although much less than the growl I got at full throttle with my 3.6 - still I like the added sound with out the cover on it. Thanks Kevin - you are the man -

Hey Mike, sounds like you picked up a airbox lid at the German Autofest! When I cut my airbox lid, when I had one, I cut three large trapezoidal holes in the cover, two on the side, one on the bottom, and removed the snorkel. The combined area was quite large. I never heard any of the wierd whooshing sounds some guys are reporting, but only heard a nice not overly loud growling intake roar only at wide open throttle above 4000 rpm. The sound different guys are hearing may have to do with the pattern or size of the holes drilled. I don't have a pic of it so here's a sketch of what I think I did:

No this wouldn't change the intake, but the new noise may combine with the exhaust noise to make it seem different. Intake is more like a deep roar. The best demonstration would be a Quadrajet or other 4 barrel on an old V-8 with a free flowing air filter.

Yeah, Steve, I picked up the lid at Autofest.
OK, now if it's a growl that i'm supposed to be hearing at >4K rpm, I *think* i may be hearing this. I definitely don't hear a "Hisssss". Masraum--maybe you're right. Perhaps the combo of the new intake sound with my existing exhaust set-up sounds different to me inside the cabin. If so, the exhaust sound from outside should be the same, yes? Anyone else hear a difference in their EXHAUST note with the addition of holes in the air box lid?? (not refering to the intake hissss/growl/whoosh) Thanks Mike

Yes, it should be a growl/howl/roar, and the exhaust should be the same outside of the car at idle.
Not that I'm saying it doesn't sound different to you, but I don't see how it's possible for the exhaust to sound different at idle after adding the holes.
