Buy them, sell them

I need new pads for my 2.7 Coupe.
Aside from OEM, which pads will best suit a 911 that gets an even spread of suburban/city driving and longer distance trips and mountain drives? It isn't my daily driver, so I drive it to have fun, but do little mileage, so wear isn't really a concern. I just want quiet pads that brake well. Fade (with my OEM pads) hasn't been an issue. Oh, and the rotors are in great shape and I don't track the car, so I'll keep them for now. Thanks in advance! [edit] I meant to add that I've been browsing through Pelican's catalogue and the descriptions for Mintex, Ferrodo etc pads are all fairly similar. I was chasing a more specific review of the pads.

For the street (only place I drive, actually) I've been well satisfied with Axxis (Repco) MetalMasters. No fade, little or no noise, easy on rotors, reasonable price, and little dusting (makes it easier to keep the wheels clean).

Ferrodo DS2500 are what I'm changing to when I get organised and place an order with PP. FishCop loves his ones.

I second Ferodos - that's what I had on my SC. No noise, very little dust, even worked well for the occasional DE.

Ferodo 2500 is a race pad. It will be ok for dual purpose and aggressive street. I think that they are FF rated but I need to double check that.
The Axxis is a very good cheap EE rated street pad. Very low dust, it will take a bit more leg than the Textars, but the lack of dust will more than make up for it.

Which is the best street pad for situations like emergency braking with a cold pad? Something really grabby and it doesn't matter what it's like on the rotors? I thought the DS2500 was this pad.

I think it was Bill V or JW who suggested the Axxis to me, or both.. so a copy and paste of an old post I did.
"My Axxis never squeaked.. anyway the brakes are better than I expected.. so, because they are softer than stock, I wanted to really push them till they faded.. and I do these BigBig Rides.. so I'm in the NW US and have to travel thru some mountains.. I get to the top and start heading down.. the speed limit is 30mph going down because the road is 8% slope.. probably the steepest in the US.. you can do more than 30mph but will lose your brakes in a routine car.. So, WTF.. I can do almost 50mph , except for the sharp curves, which were 10-15mph.. maybe twords the end I faded the brakes.. it felt like I did 3 miles downhill, with some straights.. these brakes were pushed to the max. over and over, for a long time .. and the 911 was overweight.. I clocked 3,000lbs. at 3 different truck stops.. So you know how the 911 sometimes locks up the fronts early with stock pads.. if I'm on a straight highway, 55-75mph for a while with very cold brakes.. and I have to make a sudden stop.. perfect brake control/no front locking/great pedal control..now I just beat the brakes last year on the last ride.. and haven't pulled the brakes to get a close eyeball.. but I did a quick eyeball with the wheels off and they still have plenty of meat left................Ron"

I have been using Pagid T4114-NAP's and they seem ok for street and occasional AutoX

My Ferodo 2500 are holding up beautifully for street and DE days. I don't know about racing as such, but I do notice a slight improvement as they heat up. I certainly don't have a problem on the street.

Another vote for the Axxis MetalMasters. For the price (they are still cheap, right?) these are all but unbeatable.

For street use I've had a good experience with the Axxis, for dual track/street Pagid Blue, for dedicated track use Pagid Orange

I went with Mintex and I'm questioning my decision...bedded them in and they still feel soft to me.

Ferodo - I don't recall which I have, whichever Pelican sells. I love them. Good on the street and track.

I don't recall whether my Ferodos are "2500" or not. They were an intermediate pad, according to what I read when I made the decision. I am very pleased. They brake just fine even when cold. They DO NOT fade when hot. They also do not make noise. They just stop the car.

Don't laugh, but... I think they were called Performance Friction. Murray's or Pep Boys or Autozone. $10.99 for rear SCs. Haha. I put a pair in knowing I would soon be changing out the calipers to match my new 996 fronts. Been riding them for 2 months now in hard street driving. No issues.

I thought I read, somewhere, that their carbon\metallic pad is a little hard on rotors though. Jerry M '78 SC Last edited by jmohn; 09-17-2003 at 10:14 AM.. |

Are any of these better than the stock pads for the street?
