k27 Oil Scavenging Problem
My newly rebuilt K27 (<20 miles since rebuild) is dumping oil and smoke out the tailpipe. Assuming the k27 rebuild was done properly and the car didn't do this prior to the rebuild what could the problem be? A friend has suggested a possible turbo oil scavenging problem. Any thoughts?

What prompted the rebuild in the 1st place? Given your symptoms and the fact that it was rebuilt less than 20 miles ago you cannot realistically assume it was rebuilt properly.

maybe the muffler is loaded with oil from the previous failure. it takes a long time to burn it out. i take them to a radiator shop and have them hot-tanked, and steam cleaned.

Send it back to the rebuilder, seals not installed correctly.
Be sure and check your intercooler, I bet it has oil in it too. Like JW said oil in your muffler and intercooler is a pain in the a$$. Good luck!!

I sent out the k27 to be rebuilt because I had some "downtime" during a clutch job I was doing. I figured it would take me a couple of weekends to do the clutch and flywheel seal and I figured it would be a good time to proactively do the k27. It came back looking great but it's leaked like a faucet since I put it back in.
Is the k27 rebuilder just covering his arse or is it plausible that an air leak in the scavenge line is limiting the ability of the pump to clear out the drip oil recepticle.

Hi afterburn549, I'll check the return pipe for bends, blockages, and flow. I am leaning towards thinking this was just a bad rebuild, but I'm open to any possibility even something dumb I might have done putting everything back together :-)
Thanks!

BTW, the IC and what I can see of the inside of the manifold past the butterfly looks pretty clean but the final muffler and cat bypass pipe are soaked with oil. Thoughts?
My body is going into "lack of boost" withdrawl so I gotta fix this soon :-)

Hi
If you think its a scavenging problem , you could remove the scavenging connection on the bottom of the turbo , and let the oil just run out of the turbo into a small coffee can , and have the scavenging line in the can as well , to see if its collecting the oil , thats how i checked my pump to make sure it was working.. Also if your scavenging pump is working , but your dumping oil into the intake side of the turbo , or out the exhaust side .. then you got some bad seals.. and a bad rebuild .. I also had a brand new 'rebuild' k27 ..die on me after like 1 hr of running , filled a whole hiway up with black smoke !... sent the turbo back out and had it reworked and fixed my problems ! Joe |

Mine is dumping oil out the exhaust side so I'm guessing the seals weren't done right. I'm not going to send it to the same place for the next rebuild. I contacted Alamo and thier price was excellent and the person I spoke to seemed very knowledgeable. Any experience with them?
