Burgundy '84 w/ burgundy Fuchs
I saw an '84 911 with 50,000 miles on it at a local dealer. Burgundy, at least it looks Burgundy...ish, kind of. Fuchs match the body. Interior is kind of grey beige.
Back of the car has a dealer on it from Pennsylvania. On a lark....anyone know this car? The dealer sure doesn't. |

"what dealer in PA ?"
I'll take a look this afternoon and Post then. You know, you look at a car like that and wonder how it ends up at a dealership. It probably went through a broker/auction before it got here. 49,000 miles on a 20 year old car and it goes to a broker? Jack |

Manheim in PA is the site of a big auction. Could be the source of the car. As far as car finding there way into dealerships, some people just don't want to go through the private sell route and just trade it in on a car from a dealership. Dealership send car to Manheim for auction. Dealership in Washington buys car at wholesale and sells at lot. It happens all the time. Its just finding the good car from the bad that takes the discriminating buyer to decipher.

Just an FYI on the color which sounds exaclty like my 84, technically called Ruby Red Metallic and the interior is called Grey Beige....the exterior color is similiar to what is now called Aren Red on the current models...

I saw this car yesterday on my drive home. Looks nice, but I gave up on asking those guys questions about cars a long time ago. I do know the dealership, though. They're expensive. Really expensive. These are guys that want $15k for a '74 914 with 80k miles. The car is a repaint, if that matters. Looks pretty clean, though.

Come on even the high retail people know a 914-4 is not worth anywhere near that.

You are right about that! They are in a wealthy area, so I guess they get those prices. They will haggle of course. But they start so high that when you negotiate you have to start equally low. The car I laughed about at that dealership was a pristine 944 n/a for $18,000. |

Wealthy people are not buying 914's and 944's

I can see wealthy people buying 914s. Maybe not your average super-rich guy, but the self-made, I-have-a-couple-million-and-am-now-going-to-buy-all-the-cars-I-wanted-as-a-teenager type guy.
Interesting note, my wife and I went out for a drive Saturday and went through Potomac. We stopped by to look at the Porsches and noticed that they have been moved out of the prime spot at the dealership to make way for a line of (what looked to me) pretty nice 60s and 70s American muscle cars. These, too, are the kind of cars that appeal to the guy above.

wealth and cars
I know Potomac and I agree they have some nice money there. I played CCC a couple of times. Pleanty of baby boomers buying the muscle cars of their youth. If you spend some time talking to these kind of specialty dealers as I have, the 70's domestic stuff is what moves. Having basic 944 coupe on your lot means having cash tied up in a car that you're going to sit on for a long time. The 914's appeal to a different segment but they're only slightly more popular. Personally I love the 914's. The bottom line is that its a business and 60's and 70's muscle cars are whats moving off the lot.

I had a conversation with the manager of that lot on more than one occasion. Nice guy named Tony. I told him I had considered opening a specialty Porsche shop in Potomac two years prior to his opening. I just didn't know enough about the business to move forward on it at the time. His response was that the key for him was to offer both Porsche and Muscle. Sometimes the Porsche's are moving and sometimes the Muscle.
IMHO, These people really know what will move where, and what won't. I won't argue that you don't want to carry alot of 944's on your lot though. That's not a knock on the 944. Just a question of supply and demand. I do think that if they get an exceptional price on an exceptional 944 or 914, then they can afford to carry the inventory until the right buyer comes along. |

You guys are talking about Cherner on Falls Road, no? I have a super-rich buddy who buys cars from them like it's a weekly flea market. Believe me, there are people there with money to burn. My friend there has 6 Ferraris and 6 Porsches, four of which he's bought in the last month. They also have a shop in Annapolis, which I checked out two weekends ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it's under water now.

I dont know the name of the specific dealership, we have the same kind of stuff in my neck of the woods. Why would someone need that many drivers. Seems pointless to have that many rides that are not collector cars.

I recall the post. Thats not exactly the run of the mill 944 and thats not exactly a daily driver. I know the reasons "collecting" not for owning 8 daily drivers or generic examples of an expensive marque.

The name of the shop is Cherner. I really did consider opening a shop back then. I'm crazy enough to do something like that. Guess that's why I've had my own business for fifteen years. Anyway...I called about the car today to see what they were willing to take for the car. It's sold. The salesman said, "every car you like is sold nearly as soon as we get it."
