Need to find a Smog Station manned by idiots.

I will be running B&B headers and a crossflow muffler. I want to avoid the whole "engine swap-you need a referee" fiasco. If anyone knows of a Bay Area smog facility run by certified morons or unscrupulous opportunists who would like to take some of my money, please send me a P.M.

I would worry more about the two distributors raising a question. I plan on biting the bullet and going to the referee, then I will try to get away w/ not have to keep swapping exhaust systems after that, we’ll see.

Can't you ask for a pre-test at any gas station? If they pass you, go on with the real test?

I plan on going the referee route eventually, but was hoping to buy some time.

In VA they use dyno rollers to test emissions under load. Since they only have rollers for one axle, I've heard that people can actually get an exemption if they can convince the guy they have a C4 because they can test it then.

Cars in IL are tested like those in VA mentioned by Rick. And let me tell you, there are some completely oblivious testers at our test facility in a neighboring town. I'm not sure they know anything about cars- honestly. The gas cap test is the most difficult/stringent test they do. You need to move to IL for a day Moses! I have a AWD Plymouth Laser/Mitsu. Eclipse GSX Turbo. Since it can't be tested on the 2WD dyno roller, they use the old method. The sit-still-and-rev-the-engine test method.

Good luck! I tried that route, didn't get away with it. "I am not knowing why you are having 2 distributor!" That, and there's vaccum line on the distributor.

Doug: If you claim territory "Z" you don't need an air test at all! I run all over the province and sometimes into Alberta so I qualify. Nice to know that I will not be contributing to the very "effective" smog control of BC. Bob

I went to a generic test station and as soon as the saw my placard on the passanger side door with a DMV sku # on it, he said I needed a referee shop. The P.O. had done the swap by the book and I had all the paper work. The referee station was happy that everything was in order and they put it on the roller and tested. Never once looking under at the exhaust/cat, all went well and was about 60.00 Good luck!

"2nd distributor? It's a spare. Jeez, you guys don't care when people come in with a spare tire, do you? Why can't a guy be prepared for a broken distributor?"
