Do I have short gears in my G-50?

I have a G-50/5speed in my 1988 Turbo converted from the 4 speed. Its the G50 and not the G50/50. I love the ratio between gears but noticed at 60 mph in 5th gear, my RPM's were at 2800. In the performance handbook it showed that it should be around 2000 RPM's at 60 mph if it were stock. Any idea what the previous owner did with the tranny during the conversion? Thank you...

Sounds like you have "short" ring & pinion... good for autoX-ing

The G50/50 has much taller gearing than the regular G50. I think you have standard G50 gearing. In my G50 the gearing is close to the 915. So 1st, 2nd and 3rd are good for about 33 mph, 63, and 93. I also really like the gearing of the G50

I'll tell you what, there's nothing better than winding a G50 out in 3rd and then experiencing that lovely close-ratio shift to 4th.

A G50/01 should be turning about 2500 rpm at 60 mph with 25" dia tires. A G50/50 would be 2100 rpm at 60.
