What Are My Parts Worth?

I HAVE A 2.2T ENGINE THAT I TOOK APART AND AM SELLING THE PIECES. IT RAN FINE WHEN I REMOVED IT. IM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE CAR, THAT HAS 68K ORIGINAL MILES. I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT THE PARTS AS TO I AM LEARNING MORE EVERYDAY. MY RECENT INQUIRY IS HOW MUCH THE P&C'S ARE WORTH FROM THE ABOVE SAID MOTOR. THEY ARE IN SPEC, THE CROSS HATCHING IN THE CYLINDER WALLS IS VERY VISIBLE STILL. AND THERE IS NO PLAY IN THE RINGS. THE HEADS WOULD BE SOLD COMPLETE WITH VALVES, GUIDES ETC. THESE HAVE A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF CARBON BUILD UP (COMPARED TO WHAT IVE SEEN). all the parts have been cleaned up or where applicable bead blasted.( sorry for the caps lock, i just learned that means im yelling). every thing is in spec. measured. the gentelman buying these has bought other parts from the motor and was extremely pleased. i just want to be fair. can anyone give me what these are worth. and if poss. other items value. such as cams tensioners, 3-bearing cam carriers, crank (std/std), rods, case etc. any help will be greatly appreciated. i need to sell them to fund my new engine. i just want to be fair. thanks for your time

There's alot of questions there, and when it comes to things like P/C's, having the proper measurements can have a big effect on what you can charge. I recently bought 2.2T p/c's for $250, and a money back guarantee (minus shipping) if they're not in spec. I would suggest browsing eBay, and seeing what others get. Or, just put them on eBay, and let people decide. Good Porsche parts (and sometimes bad) will gather a decent buck.

I'm curious. Why are you parting out a working motor?

A "fair price" depends on a lot of things, including the desire of the buyer and seller to make a deal. If you couldn't sell the engine whole, the economist in me would argue that you had it priced too high given that you really wanted to move it.

The same applies to the separate pieces. It's impossible for an outsider to fairly define a price, one person may say $500 and another $5000. If a deal doesn't close at those prices, then the "fair price" was meaningless because the buyer didn't chose to pay it. It all comes down to the buyer and the seller and how motivated they are. If there are lots of alternatives and the buyers are not motivated (AKA - demand is down), the prices will fall. If there are no alternatives and buyer(s) are very motivated, then prices will go up. Picture the value of a 908 motor the weekend before the Porsche RennFest II if the potential buyer's 908 just blew an engine.

You need to ask yourself what your alternatives are and how much do you want to move the parts. It sounds like you'd rather have the cash today then hold out for another potential $50 a couple of months from now. If this is the case, I'd list the parts on Ebay with a low starting price and promote the hell out them on all of the different bulletin board like Rennlist, Pelican, etc. You want as many bidders as possible, at least 2 but even one will close a deal.

Then let the "invisible hand" of free market economics bid your items up to their fair price at this moment in time. Take the money and run! Completed auctions and organized markets (such as Hershey) will generally be the best indicators of the current price, but everything changes once the buyers and seller who just completed the last deal are cleared out of the market and the process begins again.

On a more practical note, here are the results of a ebay search on completed transactions containing "911 engine". Note the prices of the engines that sold versus those that didn't. I recently sold some 2.4TK pistons for a resounding $40. The reality is that there just are not that many people upgrading their engines to "T" spec.

Then, of course, there is seasonality. It's Sept. I bet prices would be higher in the spring, as the old poem goes "In the Spring a young man's fancy turns to the smell of hot oil and burning rubber." -- or maybe I remember that poem a little off, somehow.

I'd bet prices were a lot higher in the middle of the tech. bubble too.

you could have gotten more out of it together. 2.2 stuff is not real popular, individually.

It's good to see Dead lyrics quoted on Porsche/VW posts. I relate the two forces of nature that Robert H. referred to as exhaust noises, and the exciting output of the CDI, respectively....

RH & those lyrics may be older than the MSD, but I agree about the effect. All new 911 owners should "hook up" with one and see if they can resolve the multiple pulses ....

Now how many people have a GD icon on their car?

I carry a permanent one on the inside of my left ankle...does that count? Thinking of getting a steely for the back window though...
