Megaphones
I am looking into megaphones for my 914-6 race car and was wondering if anyone had suggestion on where to get them. I have found them from patrick motorsports, but was wondering if there was anyone else.
Also, what will I gain from getting them. Will they sacrifice my low end torque? Will I realize any hp gains? |

George Narbel
1010 N. Stephanie St. Unit C-7 Henderson, NV 89014 (702) 433-9189 George actually mfr's them and sells them direct for MUCH cheaper than the other guys typically do. He has 18 and 24" lengths which fit most 914-6 and 911 race headers. If you have "street" headers with built-in extensions after the collector, like the Bursch, then you will probably want a 12" megaphone. GPR (German Parts & Restoration) just had a batch of these made up for their 914-6 customers who run the Bursch header. (I have a set on order as of today.) George sells a bracket too; you do not want to just hang them off the headers as you will put a ton of stress on the exhaust studs. Also note there are "cookie cutter" style, and just regular "tube" style with no inserts. The cookie cutter ones IMHO are stronger and look cooler. If you ever scrape the pipes in your driveway or unloading the trailer then you'll want the cookie cutter ones; the others will crush very easily. My experience is that the car revs/pulls a lot harder above 6K but the midrange torque is just killed with the open pipes. Basically, you're screwed if you have a small displacement engine and let the revs drop below 4K. From 4K-7K it screams though...even a 2-in/2-out gutted muffler seems a little "constipated" in comparison. My car is noticably more willing to zing right up to the rev limiter (7200) with the open pipes than the muffler. If your gearing is right, then you should be able to keep the revs up and the open pipes would probably be a benefit. You might have to tweak your carb jetting slightly too, depending what kind of backpressure your current exhaust has in comparison.

Does anyone have a picture of this bracket?
I have a set of twin Coast Fab mufflers to feed of my 914-6 headers and I am looking for a way to "secure" them. Thanks,

Thanks for the input. Nice car by the way, mine is orange as well. When racing I am always in the 4000-7000 range anyway, so the loss of low end torque doesn't bother me much. Too bad the racing season is over for me...

A friend of mine haas a 914-6 2.0 he just put on the dyno. With open exhaust he had 162 HP at the rear wheels with 150 ft lbs of torque, with Open exhaust (cookie cutter) he had 166 HP at the rear whell with 156 lf lbs of torque. Needless to say he is now running the cookie cutters.
