This happened to me before. I put the grease seal in the hub smooth side out sharp lip of seal towards hub. Doesn't like to go on the spindle that way. The tension spring wants to come out of the seal and get all tangled up on the spindle. Turn it around with the sharp edge towards the car and slips on great. Which way does it say in the manual?

the spring should be concealed when the seal is installed. try
the seal on the spindal be fefore you install it in the hub! the seal's spring should face out. Keith |

Excellent. And thanks. That's exactly what I did, tried it both ways before installing in hub. Funny thing, though, this is not covered in 101 Projects and my 914 Haynes says to do it the oposite way. I couldn't accept that, so I had to ask. Thanks again.
