OK.. so I go to the paint supply store and ask for a quart "painters caulk"
Home depot sells every kind imaginable. It comes in tubes. You'll have to buy a caulking gun for about $3.00. The best 50 year caulk you can buy cost maybe $4.00 a tube

The one in the picture is clear caulk. Get White. For some reason the different colors make the consistancy of the caulk change. Clear doesn't seem as good as white and black is like working with tar. I don't know why...

Let me answer a few questions. The tank was sandblasted bare and primed with poly primer. The *cheap gun* is a hobby sandblaster; has a 1/4" hole in the end. SKS will not pass thru a regular spray gun. It was messy, somethng the proper $60 tools apparently manages better than a cheap gun; it was something I already had.

Do not use painters' caulk on a car. Rust can and will form behind it. The caulk sold at auto paint and body stores is polyurethane. You can get poly caulk at the Home Defect and others.

the silicones are rust waiting to happen. I think I'm gonna try 5200 marine polyurethane.
Thanks guys........Ron

I just emailed DAP customer service to get there opinion on the misuse of thier product and abuse of my poor car. I'll post the response if I get one. Its not silicone anyway. its latex. But for now its back to the oil tank...
This is why things go so slowly over here. Look what I did last night.

No, no. I took the tank in to a radiator shop that has a process called renu or something. They sandblasted the interior and the exterior and wanted to put this horrilble stuff on the outside that looked like it is put on with a broom. I said leave it bare.

The gun was a garage sale special. I'll bet Sears has them. I just grabbed it and tried a small area and it worked. So, I went with it and saved $60. I mean, that is a nice tool, but how often are you gonna use it? BTW, your fender wells look terrific.

I may have missed this, but what exactly is the "stone guard " product being used. The results are great. Is this just your average stone guard you can by at NAPA in cans? Just asking because I wouls like to use it. And this stuff can really be spayed over existing undercoat?
Ok figured it out by the post "wurth sks" is it sold by the site host?

Does anyopne know if this stuff can be brushed on? It would seem that if one brushes it, one can also get the "dimpled" look of the factory- applied.

I bet it would get the job done too. Is money an object? I just spent $80 bucks on a pint of paint for this project. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...life is good!

The new Polished turbo valve cover, oil tank, oil lines, refinish the wheel well project is going to make the rest of the car look bad.

I have always had a thing for that particular area of the car...lol

Hey Mike!

This looks awesome! You've inspired me to do mine. I've done all the cleanup (horrible) good thing I'm in love! Question - I noticed that Wurth has Stone Guard in a spray can. Do you think it's the same stuff? Would it work as well. Thanks for the great thread!!

Craig

Thanks Craig,
I'm glad someone noticed. I used a quart in that wheel well but I'm sure it was more than it needed. It is great stuff. I don't know about the spray can. If its made by Wurth I bet it's good stuff. The paint was way more expensive than the stoneguard. But the job had so much more labor involved than money that I wasn't skimping on the money. Do you have an air compressor?

I don't have a compressor but I'm realizing I need one more and more as I get deeper into it. I started out taking the rear wheels off to do some detailing and now I'm totally replacing all the suspension. I have everything removed so it only makes sense to repaint & undercoat. I've completely cleaned the entire backend underside of the car and as you know it's a huge job!!!!!

Where do I buy the "Stone Guard" and the "Gun" that you bought? And where did you buy the paint? Is your car Gaurds Red?

Thanks for your help!

My car is a strange uncommon copper metallic color. Its a burnt orange color. I think you can get the gun and the stoneguard here at pelican. Is your oil tank in good shape? Mine had almost no paint left on it. And where the tank met the body it was a mess. So the oil lines and oil tank was my focus where you are doing suspension. I have to do that too eventually. One at a time! I'll PM you Check your messages.
I got the paint from Sherwin-Williams automotive division. Not because of any real loyalty to them, but they seemed to be the best bet here in Raleigh. They were great. I brought in the rear skirt to them and they matched the paint with a camera they had there. I decided on a single paint instead of a base coat clear coat because of it being in the wheel well and all. The gun said it was a GM color if I wanted to do a single paint application. I was real happy with the way it came out. I'd look at the yellow pages under auto paint and go to the source instead of a retailer if you can. If DuPont was here instead of Sherwin-Williams I might have gone there. For the body, when it comes time, that's a whole nother story...

Looks like a truly satisfying project. Hmmm, maybe something for me to do this winter.
